"While many transportation and city planners, researchers, students, practitioners, and political leaders are familiar with the technical nature and promise of vehicle automation, consensus is not yet often seen on the impact that will result, or the policies and actions that those responsible for transportation systems should take. The End of Driving: Transportation Systems and Public Policy Planning for Autonomous Vehicles explores both the potential of vehicle automation technology and the barriers it faces when considering coherent urban deployment. The book evaluates the case for deliberate development of automated public transportation and mobility-as-a-service as paths towards sustainable mobility, describing critical approaches to the planning and management of vehicle automation technology. It serves as a reference for understanding the full life cycle of the multi-year transportation systems planning processes, including novel regulation, planning, and acquisition tools for regional transportation. Application-oriented, research-based, and solution-oriented rather than predict-and-warn, The End of Driving concludes with a detailed discussion of the systems design needed for accomplishing this shift"--Publisher's description.

A comprehensive discussion of automated transit This book analyzes the successful implementations of automated transit in various international locations, such as Paris, Toronto, London, and Kuala Lumpur, and investigates the apparent lack of automated transit applications in the urban environment in the United States. The book begins with a brief definition of automated transit and its historical development. After a thorough description of the technical specifications, the author highlights a few applications from each sub-group of the automated transit spectrum. International case studies display various technologies and their applications, and identify vital factors that affect each system and performance evaluations of existing applications. The book then discusses the planning and operation of automated transit applications at both macro and micro levels. Finally, the book covers a number of less successful concepts, as well as the lessons learned, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Key features: . Provides a thorough examination of automated transit applications, their impact and implications for society. Written by the committee chair for the Automated Transit Systems Transportation, Research Board. Offers essential information on planning, costs, and applications of automated transit systems. Covers driverless metros, automated LRT, group and personal rapid transit, a review of worldwide applications. Includes capacity and safety guidelines, as well as vehicles, propulsion, and communication and control systems This book is essential reading for engineers, researchers, scientists, college or graduate students who work in transportation planning, engineering, operation and management fields.

Rapid changes are underway in mobility systems worldwide, including the introduction of shared mobility solutions, Mobility as a Service and the testing of automated vehicles. These changes are driven by the development and application of 'smart' technologies. Transition to these technologies present significant opportunities for countries, cities and rural areas alike, offering the tempting prospect of economic benefit whilst resolving today's safety, congestion, and pollution problems. Yet while there is a wealth of research considering how these new technologies may impact on travel behaviour, improve safety and help the environment, there is a dearth of research exploring the key governance questions that the transition to these technologies pose in their disruption of the status quo, and changes to governance that may be required for the achievement of positive social outcomes. This book aims to step into this void and in doing so presents an agenda for future research and policy action. Bringing together a collection of internationally recognised scholars, drawing on case studies from around the world, authors critically reflect on three primary governance considerations. First, the changing role of the state both during and post-transition. Second, identifying the voices shaping the smart mobility discourse. And third, analysing the implications for the state's capacity to steer networks and outcomes as a result of these transitions. The authors argue that at present there exists a critical window of opportunity for researchers and practitioners to shape transitions and that this opportunity must be seized upon before it is too late.

"Few inventions have changed life as much as the car. These large hunks of steel and horsepower are everywhere, so ubiquitous and deeply intertwined with our lives, jobs and families that we barely pay them any attention. The mundane car, however, is about to become the ultimate mobility device. Thanks to rapid advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, cars are poised to morph into the first mainstream autonomous robots that we will entrust with our lives, creating a cascade of social and economic change. - How do driverless cars work? - Why has it taken nearly 100 years to create a working driverless car? - What are the technological and social barriers? - How do roboticists create artificial perception and what is "Deep Learning"? - How will this technology change our lives, our businesses, and our cities? - What new opportunities lie ahead?"
