Against the backdrop of building a new country, this study explores and evaluates the documentation culture in early republican Turkey. Having fought the Turkish War of Independence (1919-22) against the Allied Powers, the revolutionaries led by legendary leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) came to engage with the idea of the West and its cultural origin. With the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the constitution abolished the 600-year-old Ottoman Empire including the dynastic cultural, economic, educational, and governmental institutions. In the redemption of the nation within the modern history of civilizations, cultural Westernization and technical modernization became the model for the newly found nation-state. While the new country became the subject of reformations, historic architecture was called upon to grant the aura of a glorious past to the Turks. Through the materialization of 'Türk Tarih Tezi' (the Turkish History Thesis), the founding leaders focused on the origin of Turks and the everlasting spirit of the Turkish state. In this pursuit, architectural heritage signified the formative power to represent the past. Supported by state-agencies, scholars, with supreme patriotic zeal and diligence, travelled across the remotest corners of the country to document and study the historic architecture of the nation.

"Rupestrian architecture is a particular form of architecture that presents 'constructive' and morphological characteristics different from the traditional ones. This volume proposes a general revision of procedures for the 3D acquisition, elaboration and representation of Rupestrian Architecture through a methodological study on the different phases of the process and a systematization of the operational criteria. The study was implemented by integrating different survey methods and, at the same time, by comparing software tools for data management and processing, focusing on the final representation and communication of the data. The methodological research was conducted as a national case study, represented by the Benedictine Monastery of Subiaco, an example of the integration of architecture and natural cavities that has allowed the author to find alternative solutions in fundamental aspects of the research"--Back cover.

"When architects visit a building, and want to record or identify what they see, they take out a bundle of folded sheets in search of a blank piece of paper. These sheets may be ground plans, diagrams, sketches and ordnance maps. In one way or another, all are survey drawings, operating as both documentation and analysis, enabling an architect to examine certain conditions of the built environment, whether geometric, relational, material or technical. This book explores the history of the survey and its multiple forms in order to understand how the methods of recording what already exists can also be used to imagine what might be. Lavishly illustrated, with works from the collection of Drawing Matter and beyond, it addresses the multiple forms of the survey through focused studies - on John Soane, C R Cockerell, Viollet-le-Duc, Detmar Blow and Peter Märkli - alongside an extensive section of plates with commentaries by contemporary architects. In doing so, it maintains that while all surveys begin with the site, the outcomes are as idiosyncratic as their authors ? and their methods have much to offer as tools in design practice."--Publisher's description.
