Abstract

How are older learners faring in today's digital society? Are they being excluded or left behind? The author explores this question and investigates strategies needed to assist older learners who want to continue learning into their golden years. Canada's demographics are shifting, with more seniors living longer and leading more productive lives, notably through their participation in education. Incorporating adult education theory and practice with gerontological statistics and literature, the author considers the situations of older learners, who are faced with both barriers and opportunities. Technology should not be an obstacle to older learners; when potential opportunities arise-and with assistance from family and friends-education can help set older learners on a fulfilling path that enhances their lives.

Abstract

What do we need to change in order to develop a new generation of business leaders who connect profits with purpose, who see in social entrepreneurship and innovation the key opportunity for addressing our planetary challenges? The answer lays in the contents we select to teach, in the values we invite to explore and develop, and in the methods we use. In the era of 24/7 global access to information from our mobile gadgets, many institutions of higher education are still sitting students in rows or amphitheaters, measuring success via tests and evaluations, with instructors lecturing what students should learn. And instructors feel the challenge of competing with sleepy audiences that divide their attention between their cell phones and the speaker. Stop teaching, the author says, inviting instructors in management schools and higher education to adopt some proven learning principles that can reengage students, unleash their potentials, and foster them to shape the world they want to live in. And have fun doing it. Through adult learning research, guides, activities, and stories from pioneering learning facilitators in education and corporate training, Rimanoczy brings a long-needed revamp to educational institutions that want to be part of responsible management education.

Abstract

The University of North Carolina CBE Summit 2017 offered faculty and staff from around the country an opportunity to learn about competency-based education models and to participate in active discussions online and in person. CBE enables students to earn academic credit based on content proficiency rather than the amount of time spent enrolled in a particular course. Students with professional experience may excel more quickly through some content modules or may take extra time to demonstrate their content knowledge. CBE can also offer students flexible schedules and restructured learning environments for a more personalized learning experience. For the 300 participants at the Summit, the sessions focused on broad challenges to implementing CBE into established higher education systems. Nearly sixty national experts covered a broad range of topics as they engaged with teams from UNC's seventeen campuses, the University System of Georgia, and multiple representatives from community colleges and other higher education institutions in-state and out-of-state, discussing the latest trends in competency-based instruction and delivery models. The six essays in this volume were adapted from presentations given at the 2017 Summit.
