Examines 17th-c. depictions of female allegorical figures with martial attributes, mostly identifiable as Minerva or Bellona. Looks at Guillaume Dupre's medals of Henri IV and Marie de Medicis, as Mars and Minerva. Considers also the painting of Marie as Bellona from Rubens's series for the Luxembourg Palace (now in Paris, Musee national du Louvre), and Rembrandt's tronie of Bellona (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art), both of which present difficulties in securing the identity and meaning of the depicted figure. Reviews the pictorial and textual history of Minerva and Bellona for clues and shows that the significant role of psychology and temperament in differentiating the two suggests that personifications of emotional states were major factors in determining their identity. Female martial allegorical figures required clear alignments with male rule to be acceptable and links between the goddesses and specific historical figures became increasingly rare. (BHA)
