Abstract

In 2017, as part of the MEXTRÓPOLI Festival, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor (born 1943) was invited to Mexico City to participate in a series of public discussions about architecture and the city. Zumthor in Mexico, the first publication in Arquine's new Swiss Architects in Mexico series, collects the architect's Mexico City conversations in a handsome volume, featuring edited transcriptions of Zumthor's talks with journalist Nicolás Alvarado, artist Pedro Reyes and architects Tatiana Bilbao, Gloria Cabral and Rozana Montiel, among others. In these lively interviews, Zumthor explains his personal approach to architecture as it applies to a wide range of subjects, such as: where design ideas come from, how ideas move from conceptualization to materialization, the importance of the landscape and the natural environment to design and his sense of the responsibility of the architect in the present.

Abstract

While he was working to complete the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian architectural historian Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. In meandering, impressionistic style, and drawing on their favorite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Nabokov, and T. S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time, and temporalities reverberate across Zumthor's oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his attempts at emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which conceived the building on a suitably grand urban scale. This book records the conversation between Zumthor and Lending.

Abstract

Wolfgang Laib's work is characterised by a profound relationship with nature and a declared belief in simplicity. Until today, the artist concentrates on just a few cyclical groups of work. Ever since his journeys to India as a young medical student in the 1970s, Laib is inspired by the notion of seeing humans as part of a larger whole. Having decided to work exclusively as an artist from then on, Laib followed this way of life in his art. The quite power of his interventions asserts itself in his choice of natural materials such as pollen, wax, milk or rice and their use in a very reduced visual language. At Bündner Kunstmuseum, Laib realized a large room-sized installation made of thousands of rice mountains. As an important staple food, rice symbolizes vitality and is fundamental for our earthly existence. The process of creating this work of art is revealed in the book and is related to a conversation between Wolfgang Laib and the architect Peter Zumthor. With this book, Wolfgang Laib reveals the spiritual dimension of art and leads us directly to the sources of his poetics.

Abstract

This book documents a unique collaboration between the artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) and the architect Peter Zumthor (born 1943). The 'Steilneset Memorial', opened in 2011, is a monument in Vardø, Norway, commemorating the 17th-century trial and execution of 91 women for witchcraft. The brainchild of the National Tourist Routes project in Norway (a government-sponsored initiative which aims to attract visitors to remote but exceptionally beautiful locations), the 'Steilneset Memorial' started out as a modest monument to honor the victims of the witchcraft trials, to be built on the site where the burnings originally took place. But the project, which would be Bourgeois' last major work, grew in the hands of Zumthor and Bourgeois into two distinct, haunting structures.
