Abstract

This book provides novel insights into how Chinese provinces have developed into major sources of China's outbound investments. Focusing on the Yangzi River Delta region, the book compares two provinces with highest outbound investment in China, Jiangsu and Zhejiang and traces how locality-unique conditions contribute to the economic internationalization of Chinese provinces. Through its in-depth exploration of these case studies the book reveals how the deficiency of enterprises' investment capacity heavily depends on the unique political, economic, formal and informal institutions of each province. The findings presented in this book also offer conclusions relevant to the study of the internationalization process of emerging economies engaging in outward investment, such as India and Brazil. Featuring insights from interviews with scholars, managers and government officials this will be an invaluable resource for scholars, students and professionals interested in International Economics, International trade, Chinese studies and Asian studies.

Abstract

Historically, the Lower Yangzi Delta (or Jiangnan), has played a key role in China's economic development. Indeed, as the prime example of a traditional Chinese market economy, the region serves as the core case study when making comparisons between the Chinese and Western economies in the early modern period. This book explores aspects of this vibrant market economy in late imperial China, and by presenting a reconstructed narrative of economic development in the early modern Jiangnan, provides new perspectives on established theories of Chinese economic development. Abstract

This book is a study of the social and cultural change in Ming China's lower Yangzi Delta region from about 1500 to 1644. It takes three social groups--literati, scholar-officials, and merchants--as the framework for discussing the political, socio-economic, and cultural forces that coalesced and reinforced one another to influence and facilitate the region's change. A still wider perspective reveals how the region's political ties with the state and commercial links with external markets impacted the region for better and for worse. The book also discusses the literati's reflection and discourse, which their participation in the change generated, on the issues of morality, money, politics, and disorder. The book evokes the richly textured social and cultural life of Ming China's heartland in an age of commercial and cultural vigor, which then descended into distress and despair. For scholars and for others conversant with Chinese history, and Ming history in particular, the extensive use of literati sources and the references to contemporary scholarship will be of interest.

Abstract

The Liangzhu Culture (3,300-2,300 BC) represented the peak of prehistoric cultural and social development in the Yangtze Delta. With a wide sphere of influence centred near present-day Hangzhou City, Liangzhu City is considered one of the earliest urban centres in prehistoric China. Although it remains a mystery for many in the West, Liangzhu is well known in China for its fine jade-crafting industry; its enormous, well-structured earthen palatial compound and recently discovered hydraulic system; and its far-flung impact on contemporary and succeeding cultures. The archaeological ruins of Liangzhu City were added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in July 2019.Liangzhu Culture contextualises Liangzhu in broad socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and provides new, first-hand data to help explain the development and structure of this early urban centre. Among its many insights, the volume reveals how elites used jade as a means of acquiring social power, and how Liangzhu and its centre stand in comparison to other prehistoric urban centres in the world. This book, the first of its kind published in the English language, will be a useful guide to students at all levels interested in the material culture and social structures of prehistoric China and beyond.
