Belgian architect Xaveer de Geyter is the focus of this issue, which features a selection of projects from the past fifteen years. He began his career working with Rem Koolhaas at OMA, and started his own firm in the early 1990s. De Geyter believes architecture is about opening up possibilities: the potential of a site, the hidden opportunity of a particular situation, of a programmatic conflict. Among the featured projects are Hasselt’s Z33 Museum, Sint-Lucas School of Fine Arts in Ghent, a learning and innovation centre in Brussels, and a design for the International Olympic Committee Headquarters. Includes an interview with the architect by Sarah Whiting and essay by Philip Ursprung.

Increasing urban sprawl throughout Western Europe is living rise to more and more areas characterized by a diffuse urbanization or urban network. In After Sprawl, this phenomenon is examinated by focusing on six such areas: London, England; Randstad, Holland; Brussels-Antwerp-Ghent, Belgium; the Ruhr area, Germany; Zurich-Basle, Switzerland; and the Veneto region, Italy. Their research distills a method for analysing the spatial hallmarks of today's city, replacing old urban strategies with new methodologies appropriate to the new questions being raised by these new types of cities. With a modest batch of projects to their name, Xaveer de Geyter Architects have amassed an international reputation for unpretentious architecture and urban design born of a discerning and radical strategy.

De Geyter wil aantonen dat sprawl in Europa iets anders is dan sprawl in Amerika, daar waar het fenomeen voor het eerst aandacht kreeg. In Europa heeft het een complexe structuur waarin historische lagen een belangrijke rol spelen.
