Abstract

Uncovering and modeling gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is one of the long-standing&#13;challenges in systems biology. This uncovering implies to computationally predict, from&#13;given gene expression data, direct regulatory interactions between transcription factors&#13;and their target genes. All those predicted direct regulatory interactions form a GRN.&#13;Several techniques have been tested to address this problem. Among those, GENIE3 is one&#13;of the top performing methods. However, it has a big disadvantage, which is its slowness.&#13;&#13;Using traditional sequencing methods, only the mean of the gene expression values over&#13;a mix of millions of cells could be obtained. The emergence of new techniques allows the&#13;creation of single-cell RNA-seq data, which contain values corresponding to the expression&#13;level in every single cell. It raises two main challenges. First, a computational challenge,&#13;as it creates much bigger expression matrices than traditional methods. Second, we can&#13;now see different cell types in the data, which we were not able to see before, as we only&#13;had means of expression values from different cells. One strategy is to cluster this data so&#13;that each cluster corresponds to a cell type contained in the data.&#13;&#13;Our contribution in this context is first to propose a variant of GENIE3 that uses boosting&#13;in order to make it faster and applicable to single-cell datasets. The results obtained are&#13;very promising, as this transforms GENIE3 from a very slow method to a very fast one,&#13;while having the same - and sometimes better - performance. The boosting method has&#13;however the drawback of depending on many parameters. Our second contribution is to&#13;propose three regulatory network-based methods for cell clustering from single-cell data.&#13;Results obtained were not as good as expected but call for more investigations in this way.&#13;Better results could probably be obtained by further analyzing some parameters.

Recent developments in the natural gas industry warrant new analysis of related issues. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investments have accelerated the shift away from coal as the dominant source of electricity. Its low environmental impact, reduced volume, and broad availability make liquefied natural gas (LNG) a popular alternative, during this time of transition between traditional fuels and newer options. In the United States, the shale gas revolution has made natural gas a game changer. In this book, we focus on empirical analyses of the natural gas market and its growing relevance worldwide.

Abstract

Remote sensing data and techniques have been widely used for disaster monitoring and assessment. In particular, recent advances in sensor technologies and artificial intelligence-based modeling are very promising for disaster monitoring and readying responses aimed at reducing the damage caused by disasters. This book contains eleven scientific papers that have studied novel approaches applied to a range of natural disasters such as forest fire, urban land subsidence, flood, and tropical cyclones.

Abstract

Dear colleagues, Geological energy has a long history in China. As early as 500 BC, China began to use coal as fuel. In the middle of the 19th century, China began to develop oil resources. After the foundation of new China, with the discovery of the Daqing oilfield, China's oil industry entered an era of great development. During the 21st century, with the development of drilling technology, the development of unconventional energy such as shale gas and shale oil has entered a new era. In recent years, the development of flammable ice has set off a wave of clean energy. With the carbon reduction plan proposed by the Chinese government, clean geo-energy has been granted unparalleled development space in the future. China's geo-energy development technology used to lag behind that of major developed countries for a long time, but after years of development, it has become the world's leading edge in some fields. Therefore, we specially set up this collection to collect China's advanced geo-energy exploitation technology and development trends, whilst providing some new directions for thinking about geo-energy development in China and even the world. This collection seeks to contribute to such topics through enhanced scientific and multidisciplinary knowledge.

Abstract

The book, "Intelligent Sensors for Human Motion Analysis," contains 17 articles published in the Special Issue of the Sensors journal. These articles deal with many aspects related to the analysis of human movement. New techniques and methods for pose estimation, gait recognition, and fall detection have been proposed and verified. Some of them will trigger further research, and some may become the backbone of commercial systems.
