The USS Bullhead was the last American naval vessel lost in World War II. This is the submarine's history - from launch to disappearance - as told by the only war correspondent allowed on a wartime submarine patrol. Narrow escapes from floating mines, diving to avoid enemy aircraft, and a daring sortie to rescue three badly hurt Army survivors of a downed B-52.crew are just a few of the adventures recounted. Trained as a feature writer, author Martin Sheridan knew how to share his experiences, the intangible spirit of camaraderie and sense of danger, as well as the humorous and poignant i

Fighter pilot Butch O'Hare became one of America's heroes in 1942 when he saved the carrier Lexington in what has been called the most daring single action in the history of combat aviation. In fascinating detail the authors describe how O'Hare shot down five attacking Japanese bombers and severely damaged a sixth and other awe-inspiring feats of aerial combat that won him awards, including the Medal of Honor. They also explain his key role in developing tactics and night-fighting techniques that helped defeat the Japanese. In addition, the authors investigate events leading up to

"Hawaii, December 7, 1941, shortly before 8 a.m.: Japanese torpedo bombers launch a surprise attack on the US Pacific fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor. The devastating attack claims the lives of over 2,400 American soldiers, sinks or damages eighteen ships, and destroys nearly 350 aircraft. The US Congress declares war on Japan the following day. In this vivid and lively book, Takuma Melber breathes new life into the dramatic events that unfolded before, during, and after Pearl Harbor by putting the perspective of the Japanese attackers at the center. Most other histories of Pearl Harbor are told from the American point of view, so by giving attention to the Japanese perspective as well, Melber is able to provide a richer, more comprehensive and more balanced account of the battle, its conditions, and its consequences. He sheds new light on the long negotiations that went on between the Japanese and Americans in 1941, and shows how US intelligence and military leaders in Washington misinterpreted the information they had about Japanese war intentions. Melber's description of the battle itself is informed by the latest research and benefits from including the plannng and post-raid assessment made by the Japanese commanders. This balanced and thorougly researched book deepens our understanding of the battle that precipitated America's entry into the war and will appeal to anyone interested in World War II and military history."--

More than eight hundred sailors served aboard the Sterett during her hazardous and demanding duties in World War II. This is the story of those men and their beloved ship, recorded by a junior officer who served on the famous destroyer from her commissioning in 1939 to April 1943, when he was wounded at the Battle of Tulagi. Peppered with the kind of vivid, authentic details that could only be provided by a participant, the book is the saga of a gallant fighting ship that earned a Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Third Battle of Savo Island, where she took on a battleship, c

Grassroots Fascism profiles the Asia Pacific War (1941–1945)—the most important though least understood experience of Japan's modern history—through the lens of ordinary Japanese life. Moving deftly from the struggles of the home front to the occupied territories to the ravages of the front line, the book offers rare insight into popular experience from the war's troubled beginnings through Japan's disastrous defeat in 1945 and the new beginning it heralded. Yoshimi Yoshiaki mobilizes personal diaries, memoirs, and government documents to portray the ambivalent position of ordinary Japanese as both wartime victims and active participants. He also provides equally penetrating accounts of the war experience of Japan's imperial subjects, including Koreans and Taiwanese. This book challenges the idea that the Japanese operated as a passive, homogenous mass during the war—a mere conduit for a military–imperial ideology imposed upon them by the political elite. Viewed from the bottom up, wartime Japan unfolds as a complex modern mass society, with a corresponding variety of popular roles and agendas. In chronicling the diversity of the Japanese social experience, Yoshimi's account elevates our understanding of Japan's war and “Japanese Fascism,” and in its relation of World War II to the evolution—and destruction—of empire, it makes a fresh contribution to the global history of the war. Ethan Mark's translation supplements the Japanese original with explanatory annotations and an in-depth analytical introduction, drawing on personal interviews to situate the work within Japanese studies and global history.
