Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second World Climate Conference which was held in Geneva in October-November 1990. lt was an opportunity for world-class experts from a broad range of scientific and socio-economic disciplines to review latest developments and recommend actions to address the problem of global climate change. Scientific and technical discussions were followed by a ministerial meeting attended by 137 countries. This volume includes the following : (-) Highlights of the IPCC Assessment ; (-) Overview of the World Climate Programme ; (-) Climate Change Research and Impact Studies ; (-) Multi-disciplinary Task Group Reports ; (-) Summaries of Panel Discussions ; (-) The Scientific and Technical Conference Statement ; (-) Texts of Addresses by Six Heads of State/Government ; (-) The Ministerial Declaration. The invited scientific and technical papers included in this book cover climate-related aspects of atmospheric sciences, oceanography, water resources, energy, agriculture, forestry, land use, human health, environment and development, and provide the current perspectives of leading experts from both developing and industrialized countries. The Conference Statement and Ministerial Declaration set the stage for ongoing negotiations leading to an international agreement on climate change in preparation for the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. This book is not only an important statement about the current knowledge of climate change and its effect on the world's environment and prospects for sustainable socio-economic development, but also a summary of the technical programmes and political actions needed to deal with this major global problem.
