Die Beiträge in diesem Band befassen sich mit verschiedenen Ausprägungen von Arbeit bei Goethe und nehmen dabei sowohl Werk und Biographie als auch die Rezeption in den Blick. Zu Lebzeiten Goethes erfährt die Arbeit eine essenzielle mentalitätsgeschichtliche Veränderung, die eng an das Zusammendenken von Arbeit und Technik geknüpft ist. Diesen Wandel dokumentieren Goethes Werke in mehrfacher Hinsicht. So greifen sie etwa die Vielfalt der Vorstellungen über Arbeit auf, die von einer mühevollen, nützlichen Tätigkeit bis hin zu einem hervorbringenden, sinnhaften Tun reichen, und reflektieren somit die Ausweitung des Arbeitsverständnisses von einer ökonomischen zu einer anthropologischen Konstante. Darüber hinaus spiegeln sie das Alltagswissen im proto-industriellen Zeitalter über die Bipolarität der Arbeit als produktives und gleichzeitig destruktives Phänomen.

Die Studie zeigt, welchen Beitrag die Literatur zur Problematisierung des Arbeitsbegriffs angesichts faktischer Diskontinuitäten im Erwerbsleben leistet. Umgekehrt wird deutlich, wie das kulturelle Feld der Weimarer Republik vom Diskurs über Arbeit her bereichert wird. Analysegegenstände sind neben literarischen Texten auch Filme, ein Hörspiel, Fotobände sowie sozial- und kulturhistorische Abhandlungen. Methodisch führt die Untersuchung eine sozialgeschichtlich informierte Literaturanalyse mit sozialpsychologischen, imagologischen, medienhistorischen und diskursanalytischen Ansätzen unter einem kulturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresse zusammen.

This book is a major study of the presentation of work and workers in contemporary novels from India, North America and the UK. Drawing on lively recent theories about work, it shows how the novel is a crucial form for helping us to understand what work means in contemporary society. It tackles some of the most urgent questions of contemporary life by examining the stories about work that novels produce. Including detailed readings of authors such as Douglas Coupland, David Foster Wallace, Joshua Ferris, Arivand Adiga, Chetan Bhagat and Monica Ali it explores how the presentation of fictional characters lays open the experience of insecure and precarious existence in the contemporary era. This study illustrates that novels provide an essential tool for understanding what work is and how we feel when we do it.
