This book examines the contribution of women to the Humiliati movement, providing original archival evidence indicating that women dominated the group's membership. These findings have implications for both women's spirituality and women's work, correcting the received opinion that the patriarchal nature of Italian society and of the church limited the institutional options available to women. "Clare of Rimini (c. 1260-c. 1326) led a remarkable life, preserved in the Life of the Blessed Clare of Rimini. It is probably the earliest known saint's life written directly in Italian, and one of the few such lives to be composed before its subject's death.
