L’éloge qu’adresse Kant au « Geist der Gründlichkeit » de Christian Wolff est resté célèbre, mais comme une anecdote. Il engage pourtant l’approche de la métaphysique en tant que système traité de manière scientifique. Le sens de la philosophie moderne s’y joue, tel qu’il sera repris et discuté de l’idéalisme allemand jusqu’à Husserl et Heidegger. En partant d’une analyse de cet éloge, et de son articulation au « problème général de la raison pure », cet ouvrage étudie comment la question du fondement est à l’œuvre dans la métaphysique wolffienne. La Gründlichkeit y est comprise comme une solidité, dont les exigences engagent ce qui conjoint le projet de mathesis universalis et les œuvres de la néo-scolastique. Les premiers chapitres étudient la formation de ce projet, en montrant ce qu’a de trompeur la notion de philosophie « leibniziano-wolffienne ». Les chapitres suivants montrent alors comment les sciences composant la métaphysique de Wolff reprennent la notion suarézienne d’essence réelle, en faisant jouer un rôle central au « mariage de la raison et de l’expérience ». Cela conduit à nuancer les lectures de cette métaphysique, en refusant d’y voir d’emblée une « ontothéologie » au sens kantien.

The problem of the difference between reality (or truth) and a dream and its development from Descartes to Kant became an issue in the doctrine of transcendental truth, the central part of Wolff‹s ontology and cosmology. This work presents Wolff's theory of truth and dreams from three points of view. It begins with the confrontation with scholasticism and with Cartesianism as well, then with regard to the development of a new meaning of the term transcendental; and in conclusion refers to the theory of thesomnium objective sumptum, the dream in a metaphysical sense. In addition, the impact of Wolff's didactic work is studied with regard to the Wolff school as well as the critical examinations of Wolff (Crusius, Lambert, Kant).
