Abstract

The Welsh comprised a distinct and highly visible ethno-linguistic group in many areas of the United States during the late decades of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Through a consideration of settlement patterns, cultural and religious institutions, language retention, and marriage preference, this book provides a micro-study of four identifiable Welsh communities over a set period of time. The nature, strength and long-term viability of these communities is analysed and assessed, as are the ways in which they changed; a process which saw the Welsh become Welsh

Abstract

"David Lloyd's The Moving of the Water is the first work of fiction to draw from--and recreate--the Welsh American immigrant experience. Anchored in the community of first, second, and third generation Welsh Americans in Utica, New York, during the 1960s, the stories delve into universal concerns: identity, home, religion, language, culture, belonging, personal and national histories, mortality. Unflinching in their portrayal of the traumas and conflicts of fictional Welsh Americans, these stories also embrace multiple communities and diverse experiences in linked, innovative narratives: the criminal underworld, soldiers fighting in World War I and in Vietnam, the poignant struggles of children and adults caught between old and new worlds. A boy in a fairy-tale themed amusement park meets himself as he might be in ten years. A man estranged from his wife and daughter walks into his church at night to commit suicide--and receives a startling revelation. An alcoholic and his great nephew forge an unforeseen intimacy after a chance meeting in a bar. And in the title story, a fiercely independent elderly woman, protecting her proscribed life from the incursions of a neighborhood boy, meditates on suffering and mortality" --

Abstract

In Coal in Our Veins, Erin Thomas employs historical research, autobiography, and journalism to intertwine the history of coal, her ancestors' lives mining coal, and the societal and environmental impacts of the United States' dependency on coal as an energy source. In the first part of her book, she visits Wales, native ground of British coal mining and of her emigrant ancestors. The Thomases' move to the coal region of Utah-where they witnessed the Winter Quarters and Castle Gate mine explosions, two of the worst mining disasters in American history-and the history of

Abstract

In 1890, more than 100,000 Welsh-born immigrants resided in the United States. A majority of them were skilled laborers from the coal mines of Wales who had been recruited by American mining companies. Readily accepted by American society, Welsh immigrants experienced a unique process of acculturation. In the first history of this exceptional community, Ronald Lewis explores how Welsh immigrants made a significant contribution to the development of the American coal industry and how their rapid and successful assimilation affected Welsh American culture.Lewis describes how Welsh immigr
