Abstract

Abstract

In den Blick gerät, was Medien verbreiten.

Abstract

Why were Hollywood producers eager to film on the other side of the Iron Curtain? How did Western computer games become popular in socialist Czechoslovakia's youth paramilitary clubs? What did Finnish commercial television hope to gain from broadcasting Soviet drama?Cold War media cultures are typically remembered in terms of an East-West binary, emphasizing conflict and propaganda. Remapping Cold War Media, however, offers a different perspective on the period, illuminating the extensive connections between media industries and cultures in Europe's Cold War East and their counterparts in the West and Global South. These connections were forged by pragmatic, technological, economic, political, and aesthetic forces; they had multiple, at times conflicting, functions and meanings. And they helped shape the ways in which media circulates today--from film festivals, to satellite networks, to coproductions.Considering film, literature, radio, photography, computer games, and television, Remapping Cold War Media offers a transnational history of postwar media that spans Eastern and Western Europe, the Nordic countries, Cuba, the United States, and beyond. Contributors draw on extensive archival research to reveal how media traveled across geopolitical boundaries; the processes of translation, interpretation, and reception on which these travels depended; and the significance of media form, content, industries, and infrastructures then and now.

Abstract

Bringing together contributions from a team of international scholars, this pioneering book applies theories and approaches from linguistics, such as discourse analysis and pragmatics, to analyse the media and online political discourses of both conflict and peace processes. By analysing case studies as globally diverse as Germany, the USA, Nigeria, Iraq, Korea and Libya, and across a range of genres such as TV news channels, online reporting and traditional newspapers, the chapters collectively show how news discourse can be powerful in mobilizing public support for war or violence, or for conflict resolution, through the linguistic representation of certain groups. It explores the consequences of this 'framing' effect, and shows how peace journalism can be achieved through a non-violent approach to reporting conflict. It will therefore serve as an essential resource for students, scholars and experts in media and communication studies, conflict and peace studies, international relations, linguistics and political science.

Abstract

"War Games surveys the contemporary terrain of simulated war experience and locates this experience within the broader history of war and media. Organized around three modes of war representation--live, screen-based, and interactive--this book provides an overview of the nature, function, and appeal of war games. The first chapter on live war games discusses activities such as chess, football, and battle re-enactments. The second chapter looks at the simulated, intense gaze via movies such as Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker, and American Sniper. The final chapter considers the role of video games and other interactive technologies, such as Doom, Counter-Strike,Call of Duty, and other simulated war experiences via helmet cams and drone warfare. In approaching these conceptual categories, Jonna Eagle highlights key tensions in the relationship of media and war and allows for an emphasis on both the historical evolution of the simulated war experience and the continuity of issues and impulses across this evolution"--

Abstract

This book investigates ways in which global media coverage of conflicts affects the worldviews of the social and cultural values of nationals from the war regions. It identifies the cultural patterns in remote communities that have been ‘diluted’ by IT and the extent to which the changes impacted the values of the indigenes. It also describes the role that IT especially social media and broadcast media play in the understanding of war among residents in highly wired and remote communities, respectively
