The Alps are not an immovable mountain massif that will outlast everything else but a dynamic and sensitive organism. For millions of years, everything has been in motion, and everything has been flowing. Against this backdrop, mankind’s period of influence seems vanishingly short. Nevertheless, Homo sapiens is the driving force that reshaped the Alps quite significantly and within a very short time. However, this comparatively rapid change of the Alps does not only hold dangers, but also offers a whole range of new potentials. Various phenomena of this dynamic landscape were explored within the scope of the 17th Architecture Biennial in Venice by VOGT Landscape Architects and the Chair of Günther Vogt at ETH Zurich. This book documents their findings, and the phenomena are examined by focusing on the three thematic fields of geology, hydrology, and biology in scientific essays, art interventions and on field trips.

Günther Vogt et ses paysagistes ont apporté beaucoup de passion à leurs recherches notamment celles concernant le transformation de sites ou d'étendues de terre dans les paysages. Ils ne veulent pas dépendre seulement des connaissances acquises dans les livres. Ils s'aventurent dans le paysage, à tout moment de la journée et l'année et s'interroger sur ce qu'ils voient là-bas. Ils font place à l'art et la science dans leurs études. La plupart de leurs "excursions" commence par curiosité basée sur quelque chose qu'ils ont vu, entendu ou lu. Dans ce contexte, ils explorent, entre autres choses, les fortifications en France, le Haut-Rhin en Suisse, et les parcs nationaux en Angleterre. Les résultats de leurs "déplacements sur le terrain", des projets de recherche, et les implémentations pratiques sont recueillies dans la présente publication. Distance & Engagement ne montre pas seulement le travail de Günther Vogt mais aussi, et surtout, comment il fonctionne.
