When Álvaro Siza finished what is known as the Boa Nova Tea House in the early 1960s, it marked the beginning of his career. Set in a challenging topography, the building stands as a symbol of architecture's identification with, and active interpretation of, the landscape. The composition of its low, volumetric expressiveness and surrounding rocks demands a respectful attentiveness, which until recently had been steadily deteriorating. Under the supervision of Siza, a full restoration of the building's public spaces and a deeper intervention in its service areas has been undertaken. Beautifully photographed, with plans and original sketches by the architect.

The magazine profiles Alvaro Siza’s recent work in this special edition. Featuring projects since 2015, it underlines why the Portuguese architect remains one of the most respected designers today. A variety of typologies and scales are covered, from extremely compact works such as the Clay Pavilion for teaching local earthenware techniques in Oaxaca (Mexico), a chapel in Miljana (Croatia) as part of a farmhouse restoration project, and an observation tower with lookout post in the Portuguese mountains, to prominent works like the Huamao Museum of Art Education (China) and the Gramaxo Foundation Headquarters in Maia (Portugal), and many more.

For their rigorous and loving determination, for the tireless and patient research, Siza's houses offer us an exemplary lesson of intellectual greatness. The houses shown here were designed and built over a period of time of fifty years, beginning with the four houses in Matosinhos and up to the present day, with the house in Majorca currently under construction. Such an array of houses constitues, for a single architect, an authentic field of research, where continuità allows a specific reflection and at the same time a more general one on the theme itself and on architecture. The subject of this book is the single-family house in the work of Alvaro Siza. This is a well-defined and very significant theme within the context of Siza's production, although it has never before been presented and studied in a systematic manner. The interest of this volume, then, is rooted in the clarity of the selection, limited only to single-family houses, in an attempt to fill what appears to us to be a gap.
