Abstract

This work aimed to explore the relation between obstetric fistula (OBF), stigmatization and community lives of women affected. OBF is an abnormal opening that is formed in the vaginal area and the urinal tract and/or rectum. It is mainly the consequent of obstructed labor. Despite effects, OBF still represents enormous public health issues in Sub-Saharan Africa, in which Nigeria holds an average of 16,000 victims yearly. This work was done using the method of literature review and the materials were selected using personally formulated criteria related to this topic. Findings show that the continuous leakage of urines and faecal caused by the illness of obstetric fistula often place women affected in a vulnerable situation. They are physical, emotionally and socially impacted consequently leading to self-isolation and communal stigmatization. This is characterized by continuous discrimination, marginalization and stigmatization because of the offensive odor and wetness. Nevertheless, not all women with obstetric fistula experience stigmatization and a social ostracized. Various factors are responsible for influencing stigmatization and also on women's reintegration. Motherhood is highly associated with social status and value in Africa and the Joss of this high value due to the presence of this illness, is commonly associated to women inclination. However, most women affected still hope to fulfil the motherhood role to restore lost dignity and value. Women's perception of the future and community lives is mostly impacted by the duration they have lived with OBF. Programs such as health awareness on OBF, community program towards regaining self-empowerment and the participation of women is essential in guaranteeing and alleviating reintegration. Researchers should explore more in this area in order to fill the presence gaps that currently exist on the subject of obstetric fistula.
