Le village de Déhès, situé dans le Gebel Baricha au nord du Massif Calcaire de la Syrie du Nord possède 29 pressoirs et, de 1998 à 2010, nous avons pu en fouiller 20. Contrairement à ce qui a été écrit jusqu?à aujourd'hui, la grande majorité de ces installations sont destinées à presser du raisin et seules 3 (peut-être 5) sont des huileries. Les petites installations utilisant des rouleaux en pierre pour écraser les grappes ont rapidement été remplacées par des presses plus performantes à leviers entraînés par des treuils. Enfin, c'est à partir du IVe et du Ve siècles que les mêmes pressoirs sont transformés pour utiliser des presses à leviers et à vis encore plus puissantes.

A key theme in the West African trading system of the nineteenth century is the transition from the slave trade to 'legitimate' commerce, and its significance for the African societies of the region. In this period of transition, trade in palm oil was at the core of relations between Britain and West Africa, and of immense importance to the economies of large parts of West Africa. Martin Lynn's authoritative and comprehensive study of the palm oil trade covers the whole of this critical period for all of West Africa. It explains how the palm oil trade grew organically out of the organisation of the slave trade. The situation changed sharply with the development of steam communication between Britain and West Africa from the 1850s, leading to severe problems for the commerce in the second half of the century, the erosion of African brokers' powers, and the restructuring of the trade thereafter. The result was a crisis within the trade towards the end of the century and, eventually, with the arrival of colonial rule, the ending of the long established structures of the commerce.

The increasing demand for alternative energy feedstocks is pushing many stakeholders toward the development of new processes, technologies, regulations, as well as new production and economical models. Waste oils represent a consolidated source of valuable raw materials for many industries and, as in the case of used vegetable oils, fit well with the medium- and long-term sustainability objectives of industrialized countries. Waste oils are transversal to many value chains, such as food, the plastic industry, and fossil fuel extraction; thus, they could represent precious raw materials if properly exploited. In this context, a state of the art is provided, which covers technical, regulatory, and research aspects of the topic.
