Abstract

This book, edited by the Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano, invites the reader to make a journey through time to discover a site today hidden in the basement of the basilica, but originally illuminated by the Sun. The initial pages of the volume introduces visitors to the history and topography of the ancient Vatican while exploring the site is facing a separate chapter which recalls the occasional finds between the 15th and 19th centuries and the difficult "explorations" in the confession of St. Peter by Pope Pius XII; ample space is then reserved for conservation and restoration work carried out by the Fabbrica di San Pietro in the last fifteen years. To visit the necropolis is dedicated the bulk of the volume. Each building is analytically described burial in its architecture, decoration and artifacts found during the excavations. The entire site is presented in the light of archaeological studies and, especially, in the aftermath of the restoration. The book is also accompanied by numerous insights on textual historical events, funerary symbolism, themes from classical mythology and the individual aspects of daily life.

Abstract

St Peter's Basilica in Rome is arguably the most important church in Western Christendom, and is among the most significant buildings anywhere in the world. However, the church that is visible today is a youthful upstart, only four hundred years old compared to the twelve-hundred-year-old church whose site it occupies. A very small proportion of the original is now extant, entirely covered over by the new basilica, but enough survives to make reconstruction of the first St Peter's possible and much new evidence has been uncovered in the past thirty years. This is the first full study of the older church, from its late antique construction to Renaissance destruction, in its historical context. An international team of historians, art historians, archaeologists and liturgists explores aspects of the basilica's history, from its physical fabric to the activities that took place within its walls and its relationship with the city of Rome.
