French filmmaker Agnès Varda was a trailblazer who broke new artistic and cinematic ground for nearly seven decades. Although closely associated with the French New Wave, Varda established her groundbreaking visual style in her 1955 debut film La Pointe Courte, well before other milestones such as François Truffaut's The !àà Blows and Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. Varda impacted cinema from her first feature film through her final works, with an expansive oeuvre that includes Cleo from # to à (1962), Vagabond (1985) and the Academy Award-nominated Faces Places (2017). Agnès Varda: Director's Inspiration presents the first English-language visual showcase for Varda's inspirations, art and personal life, incorporating original materials from her personal archive on Rue daguerre. The book covers Varda's "three lives"-as photographer, filmmaker and visual artist-and features a previously unpublished interview Varda gave to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on the eve of receiving her Honorary Oscar in 2017. Essays by author Sasha Archibald and film critic Peter Debruge examine facets of Varda's creative lives, and personal reflections by friends and colleagues illustrate what it was like to collaborate with and be inspired by Varda. This special issue recognizes the work and legacy of Agnès Varda (1928–2019), a Belgian-born film director, screenwriter, photographer, and artist whose work was part of the French New Wave film movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In the wake of Varda’s passing in March 2019, contributors offer reflections on the continued relevance of her work. Until the end of her life, Varda was engaged with feminism, ethics, politics, and the representation of women in the film industry. Rather than focusing on Varda's most famous films, the contributors to this issue consider aspects of her oeuvre that have contemporary relevance and those that point to the future: films, art installations, and photographs that have received less scholarly attention; her political activism; her role as manager of her own production company; and her Instagram presence. By emphasizing these often-overlooked elements of Varda’s creative output, the contributors reveal the depth of her artistic legacy and demonstrate how vastly important and interconnected her entire body of work is.

Cléo de 5 à 7 est l'œuvre d'une femme cinéaste qui dès son premier film, La Pointe Courte (1957), développe une œuvre singulière et prend une place dans un univers essentiellement masculin. Elle commence son travail de cinéaste au moment où la Nouvelle Vague se constitue et, spontanément, fait des choix proches des conceptions de ces jeunes critiques-réalisateurs. Si elle est proche d'eux, noue des relations avec certains d'entre eux, elle ne fait jamais partie intégrante du groupe. Cette place, elle la revendique tout au long de son travail : “Je suis en marge du système et j'y suis très bien” a-t-elle déclaré en recevant un oscar d'honneur en 2018. Elle n'a cessé, de film en film, de réfléchir au monde qu'elle habite, en l'observant, en racontant des parcours de femmes, en inventant des formes, en gardant une liberté de ton et un humour qui lui sont propres. En étudiant Cléo de 5 à 7, on découvre un film au carrefour du documentaire et de la fiction. On suit le parcours d'une femme qui réévalue son existence et voit son regard sur le monde transformé tant elle est terrorisée à l'idée de la désagrégation du corps et de la mort. On plonge aussi dans l'univers d'Agnès Varda dont la présence est sans cesse manifeste à travers le regard qu'elle porte sur cette jeune femme et une caméra, qui ne s'identifie pas au personnage, mais suit ses propres lois, toujours attentive à la poésie et à la beauté du monde.

De ses liens avec l'histoire de l'art à sa dimension sociale et politique, Viva Varda ! parcourt les grands thèmes de l'oeuvre polymorphe d'Agnès Varda (1928-2019). La photographe, cinéaste et artiste a déployé sur soixante-dix ans une oeuvre personnelle et fondamentalement ancrée dans le temps. Sa filmographie compte plus de quarante courts et longs-métrages naviguant entre fiction et documentaire, dont les incontournables Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), Sans toit ni loi (1985), Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000) et Visages Villages (2017). Précurseuse de la Nouvelle Vague, elle est l'une des rares femmes de sa génération à avoir fait carrière en tant que réalisatrice. Globe-trotteuse et artiste de conviction, Varda témoigne aussi d'une grande attention au monde et aux bouleversements sociaux. Son oeuvre, traversée par les thèmes du féminisme et de la marginalité, demeure d'une très grande actualité. Ce livre, sous la direction de Florence Tissot, accompagne la première exposition rétrospective d'Agnès Varda, conçue par la Cinémathèque française. Il regroupe des textes de spécialistes français et anglo-saxons, ainsi qu'une filmographie commentée par de nombreuses personnalités. Préfacé par Costa-Gavras, il est illustré de plus de 300 documents (archives, images de films, oeuvres d'art, photographies, etc.), dont de nombreux inédits, provenant en grande partie des archives personnelles d'Agnès Varda conservées à Ciné-Tamaris, la société familiale qu'elle a créée, gérée par Rosalie Varda et Mathieu Demy.
