Abstract

With the rising prevalence of urinary incontinence and prolapse in an aging population in the Western world, there is an increasing need for knowledge about this subject. Urogynecology: Evidence-Based Clinical Practice is written in easily understood language, giving the practical elements of urinary incontinence and prolapse. The book avoids the depths of research detail, common to the large texts, and summarizes practical patient management based upon available evidence and the author’s own clinical experience, indicating controversial areas where there is insufficient evidence. The book provides advice on how to make a rapid assessment and start conservative treatment for general practitioners, and provides information suitable for junior gynecology /female urology trainees. Current management options are described, so that consultant gynecologists with no previous formal urogynecological training would find this a useful quick practical update.

Abstract

This volume provides practitioners with a practical, easy to read, well organized approach to the performance and analysis of urodynamics in order to optimize their usage clinically. Chapters are structured around specific types of patterns seen on urodynamic tracings. These urodynamic tracings are annotated and fully interpreted by the authors. Multiple examples of each type of tracing are provided with expert commentary. The expert commentary expands on the potential clinical significance of the tracing, provides a differential diagnosis, and, where appropriate, discusses its importance diagnostically, prognostically and the implications for clinical management. The text contains chapters on virtually all the relevant urodynamic findings and clinical conditions seen in practice, including lower urinary tract conditions in both adults and children, neurogenic and non-neurogenic dysfunction, and other commonly seen conditions such as lower urinary tract obstruction, vaginal prolapse, and detrusor overactivity. The material is also presented in a practical manner, with special consideration to the latest national and international guidelines.   Written by authorities in the field, Rapid and Practical Interpretation of Urodynamics is a valuable resource that fills a key gap by providing a systematic method of interpretation of urodynamic tracings in an easy to understand textbook that will benefit urologic trainees and experienced urologists alike. .

Abstract

This text provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the field, and will serve as a valuable practical resource for clinicians with an interest in conducting urodynamics. The book reviews new data about the indications, conduct, and interpretation of various aspects of urodynamic testing. With an emphasis on clinical urodynamics, it is arranged into sections that correspond with the basic elements of urodynamic testing; noninvasive urodynamics (uroflow and post void residual), cystometrogram, storage studies (leak point pressures, stability, compliance and capacity), and voiding phases (pressure flow study). Other testing modalities that are discussed include EMG testing, fluoroscopy, and provocative maneuvers. Practical Urodynamics for the Clinician will serve as a very useful and practical resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in, this complex physiologic testing tool. It will provide a concise yet comprehensive summary of the field that will help guide the selection of patients for the study, preparation of the patient, the conduct of the study, and finally, the interpretation of the urodynamics evaluation. .

Abstract

This book offers gynecologists and urogynecologists a pocket guide to urodynamic testing in women with lower urinary tract symptoms. In female urology, the main indications for urodynamics are urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, urgency-frequency syndrome (also known as overactive bladder), emptying disorders and painful bladder. By collecting quantitative measurements while reproducing the patient’s voiding symptoms where appropriate and possible, urodynamics helps to identify the cause of symptoms, supports management and facilitates prognoses. However, despite the undeniable advantages, the role of urodynamics in female urology is hotly debated. The book starts by describing the physiological background and methodological considerations for urodynamic best practice in the preclinical setting. It then explains how to perform urodynamics correctly – so-called “good urodynamic practice” – to increase the readers’ confidence and ability to perform and interpret urodynamic investigations. Lastly, it reviews the advantages and disadvantages of urodynamic testing in each of the key clinical female urology conditions. A separate chapter focuses on the peculiarities of diagnosis and management for female patients with neurogenic bladder. This guide offers a valuable tool for gynecologists, urologists and urogynecologists, as well as a ready source of information for all physicians involved in diagnosing and treating lower urinary tract disorders in women.

Abstract

This new edition of Urodynamics takes into account the technological innovations and new techniques that have been introduced since the publication of the second edition in 1997. Urodynamics provides a simple yet practical guide to the functional investigation of patients with incontinence and voiding disturbances. The text makes clear the fundamental and vital contribution of urodynamic investigation to the management of patients with any form of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Concentrating on common clinical problems and the presenting symptom complexes rather than diagnosis, Urodynamics highlights the limitations and possible artifacts of investigation.

Abstract

This book aims to provide a guide for urodynamic investigation in individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries. It is universally acknowledged that this type of investigation is valuable and most international guidelines consider it mandatory in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The book offers an evidence based knowledge of applicability, clinical value, and limitation, and will give the reader strong diagnostic outcomes that will benefit patients suffering from spinal cord injuries. What is presented in this book is based on expert opinions acquired over decades of urodynamic testing that have taken place in different parts of the world.

Abstract

This book aims to impart all the practical knowledge required in order to evaluate and treat children with anatomical, neurological, and functional incontinence. It explains how appropriate choice of management in childhood depends first of all on a correct diagnosis, then on thorough urodynamic evaluation, and finally on sound assessment of the condition of the individual patient. The full range of relevant pathologies are considered and all of the treatment options are extensively discussed, including behavioral therapy, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, pharmacotherapy, neuromodulation, endoscopic procedures, and surgical reconstruction. Careful attention is paid to the impacts that treatments performed during childhood may have on later adult life, including on fertility and pregnancy, with a view to ensuring that the reader will be in a position to time treatments correctly, thereby avoiding adverse effects, and possess all the information needed to address the concerns of patients and their families. The book will be of value to pediatricians, urologists, nurses, physiotherapist, students, and all others with an interest in the field.
