Cité des patriarches, au carrefour des civilisations, Edesse devint le premier Etat latin d'Orient en 1096. Prise par les Turcs en 1144, elle fut intégrée à l'Empire ottoman (1515). A la fin du XIXe siècle, Edesse devient Urfa, symbole des massacres hamidiens (1895). Le génocide arménien de 1915 marque sa chute.
