One of the main requirements for well-functioning cities, and for their sustainability is that they have secure streets and public spaces. This circumstance is reaffirmed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in particular SDG 11 by which the creation of secure, as well as inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities is promoted.Security in the city is hindered everyday by the occurrence of predatory crimes or incivility episodes that affect the perception of insecurity raising fear. The growing demand for security that citizens ask for requires a new perspective with respect to the approaches that have been adopted so far to deal with this problem. The objective of making the city safer cannot be pursued exclusively through control or repressive actions or with occasional and generalised social interventions. It is necessary to address the issue in a multidisciplinary and multi-level perspective, following an integrated approach that incorporates considerations, abilities, strategies and actions of an urban planning, architectural, social, criminological, legal and political nature. This collection is an opportunity to reflect, in a more careful way, on a particularly complex issue, integrating different knowledge and points of view that can guide Urban Planning towards the preparation of specific actions, possibly to be included in the Municipal Urban Plan, for the adaptation, over time, of urban spaces to security criteria.

Agricultural land and woodland in the vicinity of urban settlements appear increasingly to represent a key element and strategic resource for addressing issues of residential quality, and hence the requalification of the urban construct. In effect, from a "vacuum" awaiting construction, the periurban agricultural territory is emerging as the yardstick for a new measurement and integration of the public policies governing urban and territorial plans and those for rural development. This book proposes a number of cues and methodological and operational elements to stimulate reflection on this new scenario. It does so through the exploration of a number of significant and innovative experiences in Italy and the rest of Europe, while at the same time also proposing an initial appraisal of the process of design and social mobilisation for the definition of the scenario for the Prato Agricultural Park.

This book addresses the issue of the design of urban fringe landscapes, focusing in particular on the experience of the "green belts" and the "green wedges". Experimenting in the urban peripheries of Florence, the fringe landscape project is not aimed at the reconstruction of ideal city limits, but is a container for examples of rebalance, connotation and regeneration proper to the border areas, which feature an indeterminacy of identifying characteristics and a marked reduction in landscape quality.

This book illustrates the study carried out to define the project guidelines for the river park of the Arno and its tributaries the Pesa and the Elsa in the Empoli area, and has been produced by liaison between the territorial Planning Department and the Municipalities of the Empoli district. The integrated analysis of local resources scheduled, on the one hand the identification of the criticalities of the territorial system, and on the other the conscious and distinctly interpretational representation of the local cultural bedrock. The definition of scenarios for the entire territory has made it possible to demonstrate the outcomes of complex dynamics in a synthetic manner, moving on to the individual integrated projects and specific sectorial policies. It is precisely this recourse to scenarios, seen as the embodiment of a phase of project sharing and definition, that is the innovative feature of the «River Contract» proposed as a tool for the management and implementation of the plan.

Tomlinson presents studies of selected ancient cities, ranging from the earliest development of urban architecture in Europe to the imperial cities of Rome and Constantinople. It gives an account of their architecture, not merely from the art historical point of view, but as an expression of the social organisation, and political systems employed by the people who lived in them
