La ricerca storica è fatta, sovente, d'intuizioni. La specializzazione degli studi ha contribuito a complicare la comprensione di fenomeni fortemente interrelati: «riforma ecclesiastica», «crociata» e «comune» riguardano allo stesso modo i secoli XI e XII (e non solo quelli, ovviamente), eppure, quasi mai s'è tentato d'instaurare fra loro qualche relazione. L'obiettivo di questo libro è ricostruire il contesto in cui operò Urbano II ridefinendo il significato stesso di crociata alla luce del suo epistolario. In tal modo ci si propone di comprendere se e in che misura il bando d'una spedizione militare in Oriente - funzionale all'affermazione del primato petrino - abbia avuto un ruolo nel favorire, all'interno del Regnum Italiae, quel moto di progressivo affrancamento delle strutture politiche cittadine dall'assetto ereditato dall'età carolingio-ottoniana che avrebbe dato linfa al fenomeno comunale.
