Abstract

"As colleges and universities become more networked, presidents and provosts have embraced the benefits of collaborative, sustainable town-gown relationships. This edited collection is targeted at leaders on both sides of these conversations, and it presents blueprints for building more collaborative relationships. The book's opening chapter provides an overview of twenty characteristics of the new American college town that the editors developed after listening to and interviewing college town planners, elected officials, and college and university administrators for more than three years. For most of the chapters authored by contributors, the editors invited teams that are currently planning or managing a college town relationship. Almost all chapters also include photographs and sidebars of innovative outreach efforts and partnerships"--

Abstract

"The book addresses the need to reconsider the relation between university and society, a debate which has been discussed for centuries from the Middle Ages to Kant, Humboldt and Newman. Hans Schildermans builds on the philosophy and theory of higher education, drawing on the work of John Dewey, Donna Haraway, William James, Bruno Latour, Martin Savransky, Isabelle Stengers and Alfred North Whitehead. The theoretical discussion is undertaken in relation to case studies of study practices of the Palestinian experimental university 'Campus in Camps'. The book avoids the two positions that are traditionally defended: the idea of the autonomous university on the one hand, and the capitalized university on the other hand. Schildermans emphases the importance of study practices as a site of resistance against current neoliberal and capitalist reforms of the university. The book will appeal to activists, critical academics and those interested in the fate of higher education today"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"In this book - the first work published on the subject - Blake Gumprecht identifies the distinguishing features of college towns, explains why they have developed as they have in the United States, and examines in depth various characteristics that make them unusual. In eight thematic chapters, he explores some of the most interesting aspects of college towns - their distinctive residential and commercial districts, their unconventional political cultures, their status as bohemian islands, their emergence as high-tech centers, and more. Each of these chapters focuses on a single college town as an example, while providing additional evidence from other towns." "Lively, richly detailed, and profusely illustrated with original maps and photographs as well as historical images, this is an important book that firmly establishes the college town as an integral component of the American experience."--Jacket.
