James McGill is an important figure in Canada's history in his own right. The bequest made in 1813 for the founding of a university of which one college was to bear his name only increased that significance. The political tensions of Lower Canada delayed implementation of his plans for sixteen years; and then it was only by incorporating the Montreal Medical Institution as Faculty of Medicine that in 1829 a beginning could be made. Thirty years after his death, the Faculty of Arts was finally established, but not until the trustee-body known as the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning was moved from Quebec City to Montreal and established as its board of governors did McGill College begin to revive and hold out promise of a respectable future.

Dawson was born and raised in Pictou, Nova Scotia, where the many sandstone and coal formations provided fertile ground for his first scientific explorations, which culminated in the publication of Acadian Geology. He became principal of McGill University in 1855 and over the next forty years worked unceasingly to transform McGill from a "tiny, poverty-stricken provincial school" into a scientific institution of the highest rank. He was the only person to hold the presidency of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and its British equivalent. Dawson's energetic promotion of scientific institutions in Canada remains one of his most enduring legacies, particularly his role in creating the Royal Society of Canada. Drawing on Dawson's correspondence and personal papers, Sheets-Pyenson paints an intimate portrait of a pivotal figure in Canada's scientific heritage and a proper Victorian gentleman whose pious Presbyterianism, missionary zeal, and unwavering belief in the light of knowledge drove him on a quest to conquer ignorance, eradicate prejudice, and vanquish bigotry.

"Celebrating the origins, evolution, and fiftieth anniversary of a McGill visiting professorship in cardiothoracic surgery. When Richard Alan Stikeman, an incredible businessman, community leader, and family man, died from malignant mesothelioma, his family, friends, and community established the Stikeman Fund for Surgical Advancement and the Stikeman Visiting Professorship in order to commemorate him. Dr Dag Munro, Stikeman's treating surgeon, proposed the concept of an annual visiting professor as unique way to honor his patient. The primary goal of the fund was to enhance surgical education for students, residents, and faculty in the McGill University Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. In the words of one of the founders - Richard's brother Heward Stikeman - it should "sharpen people" and keep McGill's program at the forefront of cardiothoracic education. Former residents were invited to return on an annual basis. Surgical research was added to the program and benefited from the wisdom of fifty world-class visitors. This contributed to a high degree of loyalty, adhesion, and philanthropy to the division. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has thus unified cardiothoracic surgery under the McGill umbrella: Dr A.R.C. Dobell identified the professorship as the glue that holds the division together. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has emerged over the years as an important McGill legacy, its growth and duration a tribute to its founders, builders, and supporters. This book is a celebration of that legacy."--

Twenty-eight women - students, professors, administrators, and graduates of McGill University - reflect on their lives. With emotions that range from humour to angst, they discuss the problems they encountered and the achievements they made. Coming from different cultures, environments, professions, and age groups, the authors of these essays have their own agendas and individual styles. Yet amid this diversity they deal with recurring themes that give vivid insights into what it means to be a woman in Canada in the 1990s. They write about relationships, careers, illness, children, sexuality, sexism, violence, religion, the arts, misfortune, and good luck. Monique Bégin, former minister of Health in Pierre Trudeau's cabinet, recounts her experiences in the male-dominated world of politics. Annie Iserhoff, a Cree teacher who was sent to residential schools as a child, describes her encounters with prejudice. Jane Poulson discloses the pain of going blind during her final year of medical studies and her bitter struggle to triumph over impossible odds.
