Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of financial resources of a professional football club on its sporting results.
The first chapter will cover the rise in the European football market. We will see how the revenues have increased over time. To do so, we will focus on the main incomes: broadcasting revenues, sponsoring revenues, gate receipts and revenues from the UEFA. To conduct our analysis, the Big Five leagues as well as the Belgian and Dutch leagues will be examined and compared. We will report the differences among those leagues in terms of capabilities to develop their own market.
The second chapter will show the consequences of this rise in revenues and how the clubs came to spend sprees. The boom in the transfer market will be highlighted. The question of a potential financial bubble over salaries and transfers will also be analysed. Further we will deal with the financial problems of clubs and show how the domestic leagues and the UEFA have developed financial controls to give economic credibility to the clubs and stop repetitive losses. To end this chapter, we will focus on the change in the clubs’ financial health.
In the third chapter, a statistical study on three football leagues of different size will be done. The aim of this survey will be to estimate the correlation between the sportive results and the financial resources: revenues, payroll cost and profit before taxes. A period of ten years will be considered which represent a lifetime in football. The conclusion of this study will be exposed as well as its limits.
This report will end with an attempt to show the possibilities given to smaller clubs to disrupt the current supremacy of the Big Five.

Abstract

This paper will study how the management control instrumentation in a professional football
club can facilitate the obtaining of the Professional Football Licence necessary for any club
wishing to participate in professional competition. It will also look at the encouraging aspect
that this licensing system can have on the professionalisation of clubs.

Abstract

The commercialization of sport in Europe raises important questions concerning the most appropriate method of regulating sporting activity. The development of the European Union and the internationalization of sporting competition has added an international dimension to this debate. Yet sport is not only a business, it is a social and cultural activity. Can regulation at the EU level reconcile this tension?

Abstract

Sports economics is a relatively new field of research that is experiencing rapid growth in the economics literature. The importance of the sports industry to economies coupled with the availability of financial and productivity data have made the study of sports economics a useful avenue for exploring research questions that have eluded mainstream economics fields. The main goal of this Special Issue of the International Journal of Financial Studies is to encourage theoretical and applied research in sports economics, which is of interest to both academics and practitioners. For this purpose, this Special Issue on “Sports Finance” invites papers on topics, such as, but not limited to, salary determination, ticket pricing, revenue sharing, salary caps, competitive balance, new stadium financing, rival league behavior, determinants of revenue, television and media, tournament prize structures, financial distress in professional sports, financial fair play, financial control of sports clubs, Third Party Ownership, financial efficiency in professional sports, budget constrains and sport performance, financial information of sports, ownership of professional sport clubs and Crowdfunding in sports. Papers on both professional and amateur sports are welcome.

Abstract

This book analyses the levels of influence that the European Union (EU) has over sport governing bodies (SGBs). Contrasting with the US authorities' decisive action, the EU seemed largely absent from the 2015 FIFA corruption saga. Even though the EU has established itself as an actor in its own right in international sports governance, there is still a lack of clarity over its capabilities to control SGBs. By employing a triangular principal-agent model, and by focusing on the case of EU control of FIFA and UEFA, the author demonstrates that the EU holds significant opportunities to control SGBs through both law and policy. There are, however, important limits as well. EU institutional features complicate control, but do not render the EU powerless. Most importantly, though, SGBs can deploy a variety of strategies to mitigate control. In considering these strategies and their effects on the EU's influence, this book provides an informed analysis that will particularly appeal to students and scholars of the EU, sports organizations, and global governance.
