Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive new examination of the origins, adoption, and reception of the creed that ecclesiastical tradition has attributed to the second Ecumenical Council (Constantinople, 381), also referred to as the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed. It is the most widely disseminated ecumenical creed in Christianity and probably the most influential non-biblical text within the church.

Abstract

"In his seminary classes and his writings, Frederick Crowe, SJ (1915-2012) sought to understand anew the eternal identity of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit's role in the Church's life. Despite Crowe's fame as a professor of Trinitarian theology and his groundbreaking work on Thomas Aquinas' doctrine of complacent love as an analogy for the Holy Spirit's eternal procession, no book has ever been published on this influential Canadian Jesuit, who set up centres around the world for the study of the thought of Bernard Lonergan, SJ (1904-84). Drawing on Crowe's published works and archival material, Eades emphasizes how Crowe's Trinitarian pneumatology modestly and creatively extended Lonergan's theology of the Holy Spirit. Making use of Crowe's own historical methodology, Eades looks for the emergence of new and significant questions about the Holy Spirit in Crowe's works."--

Abstract

This book aims at contributing to the scientific and academic discourse as regards to the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of youth ministry. Too often, youth ministry has been approached from a mainly practical point of view, almost asking how we keep young people off the streets. Its methodology has often not included the theological and theoretical presuppositions that lie behind this ministry. Previous scientific reflection has been determined by a one-dimensional and almost exclusive point of view. In comparison with existing literature, this book does not focus so much on the ‘how’ of youth ministry. It innovates a different approach. The book challenges the existing exclusive approach and develops an inclusive, congregational and missional understanding of and approach to youth ministry. From a particular perspective on the understanding the main objectives of Practical Theology, the author endorses the so-called movement of ‘what is supposed to be going on’. He adds the outcome of an empirical round table discussion with some 16 leaders in this field on the descriptive and interpretive movements within the subject field: what is going on and why is it going on? The book will form the standard for any new research with regard to youth ministry. The book’s contribution lies on the level of sound theological reasoning and argumentation (supported by many scholars) for an inclusive congregational understanding of ministry as an integral part of every congregation being missional in being and doing. Youth, children, adolescents and emerging adults, are just as integral a part of every congregation within which they live and serve.

Abstract

This innovative study makes a fresh contribution to Augustine's study of grace and the Trinity. Through a close historical-contextual analysis of De trinitate 8-10 and De spiritu et littera, the dissertation demonstrates that a crucial pattern of 'love rescuing knowledge' can be seen to be present in both works. Augustine is also shown, in both works, to have a keen interest in discussing the theme of human perfection. In uncovering linkages between Augustine's reflections on grace and the Trinity in these works, as well as in his other writings, this study makes the wider claim that these two famous theological themes should be explored in concert with one another, rather than be treated separately. The nascent Pelagian controversy is considered as an important historical background, and the dissertation makes use of the most up-to-date scholarship on Platonism and biblical exegesis.

Abstract

Providing an alternative to current Trinitarian and Christocentric approaches to dogmatics, this open access book instead centres the Augustinian and classical Reformation Law-Gospel distinction. Maarten Wisse demonstrates the viability of dogmatics based on the Law-Gospel distinction from both a historical and a systematic-theological perspective. From a historical perspective, Wisse shows that the actual use of Scripture should be understood as the interplay between a critical concern about the difference between God and the world on the one hand, and the witness to God's presence in Christ in the world on the other. From a systematic-theological perspective, the benefits of approaching dogmatics through the dynamics between Law and Gospel is exemplified by discussions of key dogmatic topics, such as the doctrine of Scripture, predestination, atonement, the Eucharist and the theology of religions. Abstract

Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State
