Abstract

"Wounds and the many associated problems have challenged health care providers for centuries and today, despite the wealth of knowledge available, neither the incidence nor prevalence of wounds is reducing. Furthermore, in view of our changing demographic profile and the projected increase in the older population it is likely that wound management will become an ever increasing burden to the individual, health care services and society as a whole. The annual incidence of wounds in the EU-27 is approximately 4 million, and between25% and 50% of acute hospital beds are occupied by patients with a wound, with up to 60%of these representing non-healing wounds (infected surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, leg/foot ulcers) The increasing prevalence and incidence of non-wounds healing is closely linked with quality of care and, as such, these rising figures reduce society’s confidence in the health service’s ability to deliver care that is timely, appropriate and effective. Thus, for those involved in this specialist area of clinical practice, the fundamental goal is to improve clinical outcomes, reduce the burden of wounds and improve health related quality of life. In this Special Issue “Wound Care” in Healthcare, we invited submission of manuscripts exploring contemporary issues in wound care. By devoting a special issue to wound care, we endeavoured to provide readers with a comprehensive reference source, outlining key areas of interest in this important aspect of clinical practice. The response to the call for manuscripts was fantastic and, as a result, we were able to include both original qualitative and quantitative research papers in addition to review papers, thereby providing readers with a wealth of valuable information pertinent to wound care. The impact of wounds on both the individual and society as a whole is significant and thus, concerted efforts are required to reduce the burden of wounds. In order to achieve this, clinicians need to have access to up to date information relevant for clinical care. This Special Issue has enabled those involved in the cutting edge of wound care practice and research to share their work with the wider community. Such endeavours are fundamental to achieving the common goals in wound care today." -- Zena Moore, guest editor.

Abstract

Dysphagia Post Trauma is a premier book in the Clinical Dysphagia Series. The authors are world renown for their research and clinical insights into the often-challenging patterns of dysphagia caused by a variety of traumatic conditions. This book, like all the books in this series, is written with the practicing clinician in mind. Traumatic brain injury and all other traumatic injuries that influence swallowing are described. The emphasis on evaluation and treatment is described so clearly and thoroughly that a clinician can review relevant chapters and then confidently approach the bedside of even the most complicated patient. This is the one critical swallowing book for those clinicians with traumatically injured men, women, and children on their caseloads.

Abstract

With the expertise of an author panel of leading clinicians in the field of surgery, trauma, critical care and geriatrics the new edition of this text addresses the explosion in knowledge on the impact aging has on injury, acute illness and critical care management. The text covers the physiologic changes associated with aging, as well as the clinical assessment, stratification, and management of acute illness and injury. Furthermore, the new edition discusses the full spectrum of critical care management of the elderly. Part I explores the impact of aging on health and the healthcare system. There will be detailed discussion on the physiologic effects of aging and the impact on clinical management. The management of common surgical emergencies in the elderly is addressed in Part II. Part III addresses the evaluation and management of trauma and injury. Finally, Part IV explores the specific challenges of critical care management, including end-of-life and ethics, in the geriatric population. Updated information, reflective of the expansive literature, is addressed in all sections. New to the second edition are chapters on prehospital care, burns, nursing concerns, and abdominal solid organ injury. Appropriate chapters will include case vignettes and clinical algorithms. All chapters include a bullet-point summary. Geriatric Trauma and Critical Care, 2nd Edition will be of great value to trauma surgeons, acute care surgeons, critical care specialists, emergency medicine physicians, geriatricians, general surgeons, and trainees in surgery, critical care, and emergency medicine. Advanced practice nurses, critical care nurses, and physician assistants will also find this a useful and practical resource.
