Während die Urkundenlehre zu einem Klassiker der mediävistischen Forschung zählt, führt die mittelalterliche Briefstillehre ein Schattendasein, obwohl vom 11. bis 15. Jahrhundert Hunderte von Briefstillehren (artes dictandi) in über 10 000 Handschriften überliefert sind. Eine umfassende Darstellung oder ein Handbuch zu dieser wirkmächtigen Gattung fehlt bis heute. Dabei lassen sich diese Texte über das Verfassen von öffentlichen Schreiben als Norm für die ›richtige‹ Kommunikation lesen. Außerdem wirkten die in ihnen etablierten Vorstellungen affirmativ und normativ in die Gesellschaft zurück. Das Potential der Texte für historische und philologische Fragestellungen wurde in den letzten Jahren immer besser erkannt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird jetzt erstmals eine auf breiter Quellenkenntnis basierende Entwicklungsgeschichte der mittelalterlichen ars dictaminis vorgelegt.

Face à la conception d'une œuvre fixée et reproductible à l'identique, née avec l'imprimerie, la mobilité du texte apparaît comme une caractéristique de la production médiévale. La circulation de l'œuvre dans l'espace et dans le temps, d'un manuscrit à l'autre, d'un dialecte à l'autre, d'une langue à une autre sont autant de facettes de ce phénomène, depuis ses plus petites manifestations, à l'échelle des graphies ou du lexique, jusqu'à l'agencement général d'une œuvre ou d'un recueil. Qu'on utilise le terme de « mouvance » à la suite de Paul Zumthor ou celui de « variance » selon l'expression de Bernard Cerquiglini, les fluctuations de la langue et des textes médiévaux ont depuis longtemps suscité l'intérêt des chercheurs. Cet ouvrage se propose de faire le point sur l'étude de la variation dans les travaux contemporains et de réfléchir à l'importance et au sens à accorder à cette instabilité en combinant diverses approches, tant philologiques, lexicographiques et littéraires que codicologiques ou iconographiques.
