Abstract

Abstract

The publication of Norma & Transgressão II was motivated by the wealth and variety of the reflection around the various ways in which each community experiences its own identity in the regulatory activity and gesture of rule-breaking, as well as, at a later stage, the integration of the transgressions executed (experienced as a new field of expanded identity). This dynamic, which cuts across many disciplinary areas, leads to the question of the boundaries of the individual(local) I and of the (global) community: what does it mean to be strange and not to be? to what extent does the tense connection between the normative and the transgressive constitute a process that determines collective and individual behaviour through which human beings learn, advance, and understand themselves and others? With its multidisciplinary and transhistorical character, this book is destined not only for postgraduate students of Classical Studies, but also for the broader public beyond the academic sphere.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This trilingual volume focuses on acts of transgressive acting/writing in selected texts of European literatures whose authors differ in gender, nationality and time frame. Thus, the contributions collected here consider a double questioning: of difference and transgression of norms. Both concepts are set in relation to each other in order to be able to embed any transition in cultural-social-historical contexts. The analyses and interpretations of selected texts from German, French, Polish, Russian and ancient literature, presented in chronological order, show exemplary acts of transgression in different cultures and under changing time circumstances and document aesthetic attempts to revise the existing order and create a new one.

Abstract

This book is devoted to multiculturality and cultural transgression. The study begins with the definitions and descriptions of the phenomena and terminology crucial to the source materials, and presents biculturality from the micro-historical perspective of the case studies of three well-known Polish figures: Wojciech Bobowski (Ali Ufkî Bey, 17th c.), Salomea Regina Pilsztynowa (18th c.) and Konstanty Borzęcki (Mustafa Celâleddin Paşa, 19th/20th c.). Their biographies exemplify the complicated identities at the border of two cultures: Polish and Turkish, Christian and Muslim. The figures in focus are representatives of the "go-between" category which includes captives, émigré converts and Turkophile travellers who prospered in the Ottoman Empire. These "cultural brokers" made their presence felt in the history of Turkish-Polish relations and have passed into the history of culture. They are examined from the perspective of contemporary cultural studies, set against the latest anthropological theories (cultural syncretism, identity in multicultural societies), with special emphasis placed on cultural transgression as a set of shifting interactions. The analysis of the transgressive processes experienced by the individuals being studied takes into account their religious conversion, its circumstances, nature and consequences.
