Abstract

Transgender Cinema gives readers the big picture of how trans people have been depicted on screen. Beginning with a history of trans tropes in classic Hollywood cinema, from comic drag scenes in Chaplin's The Masquerader to Garbo's androgynous Queen Christina, and from psycho killer queers to The Rocky Horror Picture Show's outrageous queen, it examines a plethora of trans portrayals that subsequently emerged from varied media outlets, including documentary films, television serials, and world cinema. Along the way, it analyzes milestones in trans representation, like The Crying Game, Boys Don't Cry, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and A Fantastic Woman. As it traces the evolution of trans people onscreen, Transgender Cinema also considers the ongoing controversies sparked by these movies and series both within LGBTQ communities and beyond. Ultimately it reveals how film and television have shaped not only how the general public sees trans people, but also how trans people see themselves.

Abstract

"Discussing contemporary popular films from Anglophonic, Asian, European and Latin American cinema, this book analyses trans themed fiction cinema that attempts to challenge, and even revise, transphobic stereotypes. Informed by key debates within transfeminism, queer theory and contemporary trans studies, this culturally oriented book critiques the representation of trans characters in a range of cinematic genres (the musical; period costume drama; road movies and action cinema) and discusses how trans identifications have been coded in specific narrative strategies (coming out narrative; coming of age drama; romance narratives). This timely discussion considers if we really have reached 'The Transgender Tipping Point' where the trans rights movement has attained such momentum that contemporary society is critically re-evaluating ideas of gendered identification. This is an important and accessible work for students studying courses in Gender Studies, Gender and Media and Gender and Pop Culture." --

Abstract

"Distancing Representations in Transgender Film explores the representation of transgender identity in several important cinema genres: comedies, horror films, suspense thrillers, and dramas. In a critique that is both deeply personal and theoretically sophisticated, Lucy J. Miller examines how these representations are often narratively and visually constructed to prompt emotions of ridicule, fear, disgust, and sympathy from a cisgender audience. Created by and for cisgender people, these films do not accurately represent transgender people's experiences, and the emotions they inspire serve to distance cisgender audience members from the transgender people they encounter in their day-to-day lives. By helping to increase the distance between cisgender and transgender people, Miller argues, these films make it more difficult for cisgender people to understand the experiences of transgender people and for transgender people to fully participate in public life. The book concludes with suggestions for improving transgender representation in film." --

Abstract

"Is media changing the way we see transgender people or is it the other way around? In the past twenty to thirty years, transgender people have gradually appeared in films and television shows with more and more frequency. However, more visibility does not always translate in a higher degree of acceptance of trans people. Authors in this book studied the most popular programs and movies of all times to see how much (and how little) media portrayals have changed when it comes down to trans folks. Although in recent years openly transgender celebrities and fictional characters have broken into the mainstream to challenge hegemonic understandings of this population, productions such as Transparent and Orange Is the New Black fall victim to commonplace portrayals, repeating the negative tropes they were trying to resist. Nevertheless, nuanced interpretations and thorough analyses from this collection show evidence that movies and programs with transgender people make progress from total erasure or invisibility. Trans, Out, and in the Public Eye: Representations of Transgender People on Television and Film is as complex and diverse as the authors, productions, and characters in it. It is a must-have, must-read book for anyone who studies or works in areas related to media, Social Sciences, and LGBTQ studies and activism. But it is also an appealing invitation to understand the current media landscape through the eyes and voices of trans and queer people, their relatives, and their allies" --

Abstract

This doctoral thesis by Wibke Straube explores the representation of transgender individuals in contemporary film, specifically focusing on the concept of 'Trans Cinema'. The study investigates the potential for utopian and hopeful narratives within films like 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch', 'Transamerica', and 'Laurence Anyways'. By analyzing scenes of singing, dancing, and dreaming, the thesis highlights alternative ways of engaging with trans identities beyond narratives of humiliation and violence. It employs a transfeminist perspective and draws on feminist and cultural theories to propose new conceptual tools such as 'exit scapes' and 'sensible cinematic'. This work contributes to transgender studies and visual culture, offering insights into the cinematic portrayal of gender dissidence.

Abstract

Traces how cinema offers alternative ways to understand gender transitions through a specific aesthetics of change. Drawing on Barthe's idea of the "shimmer" and Foucault's notion of sex as a mirage, the author shows how sex and gender can appear mirage-like on film, an effect they label shimmering. The author applies the concept of shimmering - which delineates change in its emergent form as well as the qualities of transforming bodies, images, and affects - to analyses of films that span time and genre. These include examinations of the fantastic and phantasmagorical shimmerings of sex change in Georges Méliès's nineteenth-century trick films and Lili Elbe's 1931 autobiographical writings and photomontage in "Man into Woman." The author also explores more recent documentaries, science fiction, and pornographic and experimental films. Presenting a cinematic philosophy of transgender embodiment that demonstrates how shimmering images mediate transitioning, the author not only offers a corrective to the gender binary orientation of feminist film theory; they open up new means to understand trans ontologies aepistemologiesies as emergent, affective, and processual.

Abstract

In the history of cinema, trans people are usually murdered, made into a joke, or viewed as threats to the normal order -- relegated to a lost highway of corpses, fools, and monsters. In this book, trans film critics Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay take the reader on a drive down this lost highway, exploring the way that trans people and transness have evolved on-screen. Starting from the very earliest representations of transness in silent film, through to the multiplex-conquering Matrix franchise and on to the emergence of a true trans-authored cinema, Corpses, Fools and Monsters spans everything from musicals to body horror to avant garde experimental film to tell the story of the trans film image. In doing so, the authors investigate the wider history of trans representation -- an exhilarating journey of compromise, recuperation, and potential liberation that they argue is only just the beginning.

Abstract

Abstract

Pasolini queer ?
