The incidence of total hip arthroplasty is increasing in number because of successful outcomes. Although technically challenging, once mastered a hip replacement is one of the most gratifying surgeries for both patient and surgeon. This book covers some of the most important aspects of hip replacement surgery. These include preoperative planning, anesthesia, classification systems, management of proximal femur fractures, anterior approach, complications, and rehabilitation aspects of hip arthroplasty. The book is intended for arthroplasty surgeons, anesthetists, and physical therapists who will find the book useful in parts and as a whole if they deal with arthroplasty cases on a regular basis. Experience-based narration of various subjects by authors ensures that first-hand experience is passed on to readers in a simple, easy-to-understand manner.

This book discusses physical examination, imaging, differential diagnoses, and treatment of hip pathologies. For each diagnosis, the book sets out the typical presentation, options for operative management, and expected outcomes. Practical and user-friendly, Hip Replacement is the ideal, on-the-spot resource for medical students and practitioners seeking fast facts on diagnosis and management. Its format makes it a perfect quick reference guide and its content addresses the most commonly encountered orthopedic problems in practice.

The purpose of this book is to offer an exhaustive overview of the recent insights into the state-of-the-art in most performed arthroplasties of large joints of lower extremities. The treatment options in degenerative joint disease have evolved very quickly. Many surgical procedures are quite different today than they were only five years ago. In an effort to be comprehensive, this book addresses hip arthroplasty with special emphasis on evolving minimally invasive surgical techniques. Some challenging topics in hip arthroplasty are covered in an additional section. Particular attention is given to different designs of knee endoprostheses and soft tissue balance. Special situations in knee arthroplasty are covered in a special section. Recent advances in computer technology created the possibility for the routine use of navigation in knee arthroplasty and this remarkable success is covered in depth as well. Each chapter includes current philosophies, techniques, and an extensive review of the literature.

Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) remains one of the most successful procedures in Orthopaedic surgery. It has become very clear that it is the surgical expertise, in particular the quality of the cementing technique, which will affect long-term outcome and success. It is the intention of this book to provide an up-to-date comprehensive assessment of the entire field of cemented THA. Special emphasis has been given to practice-relevant aspects: well-illustrated and detailed operative steps as a practical guideline, a basic science chapter and long-term outcome data are provided. Minimally invasive surgery, modern perioperative management and patient fast tracking are covered. A number of highly respected experts have contributed to this in-depth compilation of the "state of the art" in 2005. This book is written and intended for both, trainees and established arthroplasty surgeons who are dedicated to perform a well-cemented THA.

The 32nd Japanese Hip Society (JHS) Congress was held November 6–8, 2005, in Niigata, Japan. Guest speakers from many countries and specialists for hip disease presented papers that focused on joint preservation for osteoarthritis of the hip, joint preservation for aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, treatment for epiphyseolysis capitis femoris, and up-to-date information and knowledge on joint arthroplasty. Altogether, there were many important presentations about joint preservation and replacement. This book covers the main themes of the congress. The starting point for the treatment of hip disease depends on how we can preserve the natural hip joint and on steps leading to regeneration of the diseased, injured, or destroyed joint. Preservation and regeneration treatments following traditional and theoretical methods do not need to use expensive materials, such as the arti?cial joints used in arthroplasty. On the other hand, preservation and regeneration tre- ments are dif?cult to perform and require a lengthy rehabilitation period.

In light of more clinical experience, this book reviews the principles and concepts underlying Professor Sir John Charnley’s original work Low Friction Arthroplasty of the Hip: Theory and Practice. Consistency of design, materials, principles of surgical techniques and regular follow-up of a large number of patients has offered truly long-term results to be presented in this book. Charnley Low-Frictional Torque Arthroplasty of the Hip: Practice and Results involves studies spanning from 1962 - 2015 to successfully indicate the avenues for further development and new ideas in clinical practice. With over 40 years of research included, this book is not a sudden diversion into a speculative area of hip replacement surgery. It is a carefully documented work of the evolution of the Charnley low-frictional torque arthroplasty to assist surgeons who practice this technique in their daily clinical work. .

Recent years have witnessed a trend toward the use of minimally invasive techniques in all areas of orthopedic surgery, including hip replacement. This is unsurprising as the benefits of the minimally invasive approach are recognized to be significant: smaller incisions, reduced soft tissue trauma, reduced blood loss, shorter in-patient stays, and faster rehabilitation. This book aims to provide a comprehensive guide to the use of minimally invasive surgery in total hip arthroplasty. The four commonly employed approaches – anterior, anterolateral OCM, anterolateral supine, and posterior – are described in detail with the aid of high-quality illustrations. For each approach, clear guidance is offered on patient selection, patient positioning, surgical procedure, postsurgical care, and rehabilitation. Potential complications and the advantages and disadvantages of each option are carefully weighed up, and experts also present their personal experiences, outcomes, and success rates with the different approaches. The book concludes by discussing future trends in hip arthroplasty.
