The historian Tacitus began his Annals with the death of Augustus. He considered this date, not Actium, to be the pivotal moment in the crystallization of 'rule by one man.' This book considers the role played by Augustus' successor Tiberius in preserving the system created by the ultimate victor of Rome's civil wars. Drawing upon the work of sociologists and political scientists, it uses the lens of the routinization of charisma to demonstrate how Tiberius' reverence for Augustus and preservation of his policies enacted lasting political change. Tiberius' encouragement of the cult of Divus Augustus and his own refusal of divine honors carry over into other aspects of his reign, where Tiberius recedes into the background, permanently withdrawing from Rome. The charisma of Augustus protected his family, the domus Augusta, and the entire empire, even after his death. This enshrined the position of Augustus as a permanent institution, the principate.

Sämtliche dramatische Texte von Gertrud Kolmar in einer kritisch kommentierten Ausgabe. Gertrud Kolmar (1894-1943) fand bisher hauptsächlich als Lyrikerin Anerkennung. Weder ihre Prosa noch ihre Theaterstücke wurden zu ihren Lebzeiten veröffentlicht. 1943 wurde sie im Verlauf der »Fabrikaktion« deportiert und in Auschwitz ermordet. Gertrud Kolmars dramatisches Schaffen ist bislang nur unzulänglich und nicht vollständig bekannt. Das Drama »Cécile Renault. Schauspiel in vier Aufzügen« (1934/1935) über die Französische Revolution, verfaßt in der Tradition von Georg Büchner und Romain Rolland, blieb bislang unveröffentlicht. Es steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Gedichtzyklus »Robespierre« und dem Essay »Das Bildnis Robespierres«. Das Drama »Nacht. Dramatische Legende in vier Aufzügen« (1938) über eine Episode aus dem Leben des späteren römischen Kaisers Tiberius, der den Göttern »umsonst« ein jüdisches Mädchen opfert, ist erstmals im Jahr 1994 in einer zweisprachigen (italienisch-deutschen) Ausgabe erschienen. Die Uraufführung im Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus 2000 wurde von der Kritik begeistert gefeiert. »Möblierte Dame (mit Küchenbenutzung) gegen Haushaltshilfe« (vermutlich 1939) ist eine Farce mit zwei Personen, die vom Alltag in einem sogenannten Berliner »Judenhaus« berichtet. Das Stück wurde zuerst 1994 in einem Ausstellungskatalog publiziert. In dieser kritischen Edition werden die Stücke von Gertrud Kolmar erstmals versammelt, ediert und eingehend kommentiert.
