Nel Medioevo le Vite dei santi erano raccontate e continuamente rielaborate, arricchite ogni volta di dettagli nuovi e diversi, che diedero corpo a un gran numero di varianti della medesima storia. Alcune leggende agiografiche ebbero un'enorme diffusione, paragonabile a quella che oggi hanno i romanzi, o certe biografie romanzate. I cinque testi tradotti in questo volume sono molto diversi tra loro, sia per il registro linguistico sia perché appartengono a epoche differenti; li accomuna il fatto che le protagoniste sono donne e alcune di esse scelgono di travestirsi da monaco. Proprio in ragione di questa diversità possono offrire un quadro, naturalmente parziale, della santità femminile nel Medioevo greco e della varietà di tipologie che la caratterizza. Ecco allora Pelagia, prostituta convertita e poi redenta. Maria ed Eufrosine, entrambe orfane di madre, compiono la scelta di entrare in un monastero maschile travestendosi, l'una per non separarsi dal padre, l'altra per evitare il matrimonio. Teoctista, presa prigioniera dagli Arabi, riesce a sfuggire in modo rocambolesco ai suoi rapitori e diviene eremita su un'isola deserta. L'imperatrice Teodora, l'unico personaggio realmente esistito, si assicura la santità riabilitando il culto delle icone proibito dagli imperatori iconoclasti.
