In der ,Sattelzeit' des späten 18. Jahrhunderts bildete das deutschsprachige Musiktheater in seinen vilefältigen Formen den erfolgreichsten Bestandteil der Theaterpraxis. Das Musiktheater als besonders wirksame Art der Öffentlichkeitsstiftung und Diskursbündelung ermöglicht daher einen besonders guten Einblick in die Medienkrise und den anthropologischen Wandel im späten 18. Jahrhundert. Gerade die körperliche Produktion und die sinnliche Rezeption des Musiktheaters (im Zusammenspiel verschiedener Formen optischer und akustischer Sinneswahrnehmungen) verleihen dieser Gattung bei den Zeitgenossen paradigmatische Funktion für das Verständnis menschlicher Subjektivität, Sinnlichkeit und Emotionalität. Das Musiktheater als frühe massenmediale Form lässt dabei einen Prozess wechselseitiger Assimilation ,bürgerlicher' und höfischer Wertordnungen und Diskurse erkennen - einen Prozess, der für die weitere gesellschaftliche Entwicklung Deutschlands im 19. Jahrhundert äußerst signifikant erscheint. Die Studie untersucht diese anthropologische Dimension des Musiktheaters unter kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Sie enthält einen typologischen Überblick über die Rahmenbedingungen der multimedialen Gattung und ihre diachronen Veränderungen, paradigmatische Analysen des Zusammenhangs von Dramaturgie und Anthropologie anhand ausgewählter Werke, einen Abriss der zeitgenössischen Theorie des Genres sowie ein umfassendes Verzeichnis aufgeführter deutschprachiger Originalwerke (1760-1800).
