Abstract

The main aim of this book is to discuss various modes of studying and defining the medieval self, based on a wide span of sources from medieval Western Scandinavia, c. 800-1500, such as archeological evidence, architecture and art, documents, literature, and runic inscriptions. The book engages with major theoretical discussions within the humanities and social sciences, such as cultural theory, practice theory, and cognitive theory. The authors investigate how the various approaches to the self influence our own scholarly mindsets and horizons, and how they condition what aspects of the medieval self are 'visible' to us. Utilizing this insight, we aim to propose a more syncretic approach towards the medieval self, not in order to substitute excellent models already in existence, but in order to foreground the flexibility and the complementarity of the current theories, when these are seen in relationship to each other. The self and how it relates to its surrounding world and history is a main concern of humanities and social sciences. Focusing on the theoretical and methodological flexibility when approaching the medieval self has the potential to raise our awareness of our own position and agency in various social spaces today.

The results are illustrated by themes like "Reasons to be an actor", "A production can be hell" and "Without a safety net" sorted and with numerous examples and interview quotations presented alive.

Abstract

Abstract

Building on the thriving discussion on the role of attention within the phenomenological tradition, from Aron Gurwitsch and Merleau-Ponty to Bernhard Waldenfels, this book investigates the enigmatic role of attention as a faculty that enables change within subjective and intersubjective experience. The aim of the book is to reveal some characteristics of the processes in which subjects are unmade and remade, and to highlight how we are able to change our relation to an empirical world that nevertheless has unity and constancy in our perception. Antony Fredriksson (PhD) is a researcher at the Centre for Ethics as Study in Human Value, University of Pardubice. His areas of interest include aesthetics, phenomenology, philosophy of perception, film and philosophy, attention, intersubjectivity, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Ludwig Wittgenstein. .

Abstract

The publication of this book, East Asian Philosophies and Psychology: Towards Psychology of Self-cultivation, signifies an important breakthrough for the indigenization movements of psychology which have happened in many non-Western countries since 1980s. Viewing from the perspective of scientific revolution (Kuhn, 1969), when Western paradigms of psychology are transplanted to non-Western countries and encounter anomalies which cannot be explained by the imported theories, the foreign theories are in a state of crisis waiting for scientific revolution.

Abstract

"Towering above the swamp of books on Heidegger a work finally tackles, develops and expands Heidegger’s theory of freedom in a systematic fashion. Matthew Barnard’s work is scholarly, rigorous and original and will transform how we understand Heidegger’s philosophy, and most importantly our understanding of the nature of freedom itself." —Dr Patrick O'Connor, Associate Professor in Philosophy, Staffordshire University "This eloquent book convincingly presents the question of freedom as a key to understanding Heidegger's thought through Being and Time towards the Kehre. In so doing, it gives us a fruitful context in which to interpret this pivotal and defining moment of his thinking." —Felix Ó Murchadha, Personal Professor of Philosophy, University of Galway This book is the first monograph in English exclusively dedicated to the exegesis of Martin Heidegger’s radical conception of freedom which was developed in response to the human experience of existential guilt and mortality explained through the phenomena of transcendence and truth. The book is additionally distinctive in that it is the first to approach these issues with the purpose of clarifying the texts involved rather than constructing a novel conception of agency or freedom on the basis of those texts. Heidegger’s Conception of Freedom is ideal for scholars and researchers of philosophy and especially for those focusing on Heidegger's thought, existentialism and phenomenology. Dr Matthew J. Barnard is Lecturer in Philosophy, Manchester Metropolitan University. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the British Society for Phenomenology.

Abstract

Nietzsche's metaphor of the spider that spins its cobweb expresses his critique of the metaphysical use of language - but it also suggests that ‟we, spiders‟, are able to spin different, life-affirming, healthier, non-metaphysical cobwebs. This book is a collection of 12 essays that focus not only on Nietzsche's critique of the metaphysical assumptions of language, but also on his effort to use language in a different way, i.e., to create a ‟new language‟. It is from this viewpoint that the book considers such themes as consciousness, the self, metaphor, instinct, affectivity, style, morality, truth, and knowledge. The authors invited to contribute to this volume are Nietzsche scholars who belong to some of the most important research centers of the European Nietzsche-Research: Centro Colli-Montinari (Italy), GIRN (Europhilosphie), SEDEN (Spain), Greifswald Research Group (Germany), NIL (Portugal). In 2011 João Constâncio and Maria João Mayer Branco edited Nietzsche on Instinct and Language, also published by Walter de Gruyter. The two books complement each other.
