Être en couple est un désir fort chez un grand nombre de personnes, et une relation amoureuse gratifiante constitue un facteur d'épanouissement pour les partenaires. Des attentes insatisfaites ou des conflits chroniques vont par contre avoir comme conséquences une remise en cause de la relation et une souffrance psychique qui peuvent amener les partenaires à chercher de l'aide auprès d'un professionnel. La dernière partie opère une synthèse de l'ouvrage en dégageant les grandes lignes communes aux différents instruments et en récapitulant l'usage qui peut en être fait dans la pratique clinique.
