Territorial Leasing in Diplomacy and International Law focuses on an unexplored but relatively common practice in which states reallocate their rights on territory without altering formal boundaries or resorting to definitive cessions. As products of diplomacy, leases address a frequent situation that, in extreme cases, can lead to war: the desire by more than one state to exercise sovereign authority in the same place. As instruments of international law, they paradoxically reinforce the territorial integrity of states while raising questions about the nature of their sovereignty. This book draws from a large number of leases to examine the practice from historic to modern times, describing their elements in detail and assessing them from both political and legal perspectives.

Long description: To date, surprisingly little research has been devoted to internationalization speed, which is arguably one of the most important time-based dimensions of a firm's internationalization process. There has been some research devoted to speed in the context of international entrepreneurship and the internationalization of newly founded firms, but internationalization speed in the context of established firms has by and large been overlooked. An underexplored question therefore is: What explains differences in internationalization speed in the context of established firms? This work aims to make the following contributions: First, an overview on the study of internationalization speed and the drivers and outcomes of speed that have been discussed in the literature so far is provided to motivate the readers to develop their own research ideas in this area. Second, an empirical investigation on the speed of internationalization in the context of established firms is presented. This empirical study focuses on knowledge as one of the core drivers of the internationalization speed of newly established business units (NBUs) of established multinational enterprises (MNEs). The book provides exciting insights for international business researchers seeking a comprehensive overview of the topic of internationalization speed, as well as for business practitioners and managers that develop strategies how and how fast to internationalize their companies. Martin Hammes studied business administration in Bamberg, Aarhus and Vallendar. He earned his doctorate degree at the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management with this dissertation.

Sir George Cornewall Lewis was a British politician and scholar. Lewis was called to the Bar in 1833, but turned from law to politics, entering the House of Commons in 1847. He was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1850, and Home Secretary in 1859. This volume, first published in 1841, contains Lewis' discussion of the political interaction between a dependent government and its superior government. Focusing on the dependent government as a political institution rather than as a colony with economic assets, Lewis explores the distinctions between the two types of government and the ways in which a dependent government may be formed, discussing in detail the advantages and disadvantages of this arrangement to both the dependent and the superior government. This volume was the first published work on this subject, and provides a valuable example of 19th-century British Liberal political theory.
