This ebook consists of a summary of the ideas, viewpoints and facts presented by Tim Wu in his book "The Master Switch, The Rise and Fall of Information Empires". This summary offers a concise overview of the entire book in less than 30 minutes reading time. However this work does not replace in any case Tim Wu's book.Wu argues that information technology start as an open playing field and then eventually became dominated by a big entity exercising monopoly. He argues that the world's information is now traveling in a single network; the Internet, therefore he says that great information

The Internet Age: on the face of it, an era of unprecedented freedom in both communication and culture. Yet in the past, each major new medium, from telephone to satellite television, has crested on a wave of similar idealistic optimism, before succumbing to the inevitable undertow of industrial consolidation. Every once free and open technology has, in time, become centralized and closed; as corporate power has taken control of the 'master switch.' Today a similar struggle looms over the Internet, and as it increasingly supersedes all other media the stakes have never been higher. Part

The profusion of websites and applications that characterise the modern Internet may seem a far cry from the primitive telegraph system of the late 1830s. There is, however, a direct link. The invention of the electric telegraph paved the way for telephone networks which, in turn, laid the foundations for today's Internet. In less than 170 years, simple arrangements of magnets, switches and cables evolved to become the largest and most complex machine in the world. How did this happen? What were the inventions that shaped modern communications? Who were the key players in this amazing story? How does the Internet work? And what is coming next? This fascinating and long-overdue book answers these and many other questions, bringing to life the characters, the times they live in, and the technological revolution that they brought about. Dot-Dash to Dot.com: - describes some truly heroic feats of 19th century engineering, and the impact that the first telecommunication systems had on the Victorian world; - reveals how the success of the electric telegraph led to the development of the telephone and the fax machine; - explores the early experiments that led to the Internet and the World Wide Web; - explains how networks work - and why they sometimes don't; - chronicles the phenomenal growth of mobile networks; - describes how the digital revolution is driving the introduction of "next generation networks;" - examines the extraordinary growth in network applications; and - introduces a number of larger-than-life characters, whose inventive genius and entrepreneurial flair left an indelible mark on the modern world.

Schiller traces the transformation of the Internet from government, military, and educational tool to agent of "digital capitalism" through three critically important and interlinked realms. The networks that comprise cyberspace were originally created at the behest of government agencies, military contractors, and allied educational institutions. Over the past generation or so, however, a growing number of these networks began to serve primarily corporate users. Under the sway of an expansionary market logic, the Internet began a political-economic transition toward what Dan Schiller calls "digital capitalism."Schiller traces these metamorphoses through three critically important and interlinked realms. Parts I and II deal with the overwhelmingly "neoliberal" or market-driven policies that influence and govern the telecommunications system and their empowerment of transnational corporations while at the same time exacerbating exisiting social inequalities. Part III shows how cyberspace offers uniquely supple instruments with which to cultivate and deepen consumerism on a transnational scale, especially among privileged groups. Finally, Part IV shows how digital capitalism has already overtaken education, placing it at the mercy of a proprietary market logic.
