In dem „Ausgrabungsabschnitt Tell (Zitadelle)“ waren zwei Grabungsstellen angelegt worden, „Westhang“ und „Gebäude P“. Die Grabungsstelle „Westhang“ war ein Stufenschnitt, der die Siedlungsabfolge von 30 „Schichten“ von der Hügeloberkante („Schicht“ 0) bis zur „Schicht“ 29 generierte. Die Grabungsstelle „Gebäude P“ war dagegen eine Flächengrabung. Vorangestellt sind eine Einführung in die methodischen Grundlagen und in das Grundverständnis der Ausgrabung (H. Kühne) sowie eine Kurzbeschreibung der Zielsetzungen, Verläufe und vorläufigen Ergebnisse der Kampagnen 1978-1984 und 1987-1988 (H. Kühne). R. Bernbeck und P. Pfälzner analysieren die stratigraphische Abfolge der Grabungsstelle „Westhang“ wie sie sich nach den Kampagnen 1978-1981 darstellte. Mit der Einbindung der Architekturbefunde nach den Ausgrabungen 1987-1988 kommt M. Novák zu einer leicht differenzierten Siedlungsabfolge. Die folgenden Beiträge von R. Bernbeck und A. Oettel sind den Kleinfunden dieser Kampagnen gewidmet. Einzelabhandlungen zu den Glasgefäßen (C. Römer-Strehl), den Münzen (A. Oettel) und der Statuette des Herakles (S.B. Downey) folgen. Ein umfangreicherer Beitrag ist der Keramik (C. Römer-Strehl) gewidmet, der auf eine Dissertation zurückgeht. Nach einer Behandlung der aramäischen Gefäßaufschriften (W. Röllig) und der Identifizierung des antiken Namens von Tall Šēḫ Ḥamad mit Magdala (H. Kühne/ A. Luther) folgen zwei kulturhistorische Abhandlungen von A. Oettel und A. Luther. Den Abschluss bildet ein Kurzbericht über das islamische Heiligtum des Šēḫ Ḥamad und das rezente Gräberfeld auf der Kuppe des Hügels (M. Novák). The excavation unit „Tell / Citadel” comprised two excavation sections, “Westhang” and “Gebäude P”. The excavation section “Westhang” was a step trench that generated the sequence of 30 levels, from 0 to 29, level 0 being the Tell’s surface. In contrast, the excavation section “Gebäude P” was an area excavation. The volume starts with an introduction on the methodical approach and on the philosophy of the excavation (H. Kühne) and with a summary of the course and of the preliminary results of the seasons 1978-1984 and 1987-1988 (H. Kühne). R. Bernbeck and P. Pfälzner are analyzing the stratigraphic sequence as portrayed after the seasons 1978-1981. Embedding the architectural remains after the seasons 1987-1988 M. Novák modifies the sequence slightly. In the following chapters R. Bernbeck and A. Oettel present the artefacts of the respective seasons. Special attention is devoted to glass vessel (C. Römer-Strehl), coins (A. Oettel), and a statuette of Herakles (S.B. Downey). W. Röllig presents the Aramaic inscriptions on jars. A. Oettel reviews the settlement history of the site during the Parthian-Roman period; A. Luther evaluates the historical perspectives. H. Kühne and A. Luther present the evidence of the identification of Tall Sheikh Hamad with Magdalu/Magdala. Completing the volume is an essay by M. Novák on the Islamic sanctuary situated on the summit of the Tell and on the recent cemetery surrounding it.
