This new resource covers a wide range of content by focusing on theorems and examples to explain key concepts of signals and linear systems theory in fewer than 300 pages. Readers will learn how to compute the impulse response of an electronic circuit, design a filter in the presence of colored noise, and use the Z transform to design a digital filter. The book covers transform theory and statespace analysis and design. Stochastic systems and signals, a topic that has become important recently with the advent of renewable energy, is also presented. The Ergodic theorem is discussed in detail, with specific, real world examples of its application to renewable power and energy systems as well as signal processing systems. The book also provides a self-contained introduction to the theory of probability. Written for the practicing engineer and the student new to the subject, this comprehensive guide includes links to literature and online resources for the reader who wants additional information. In addition to numerous worked examples, this primer includes MATLABª source code to assist readers with their projects in the field.

Many infinite-dimensional linear systems can be modelled in a Hilbert space setting. Others, such as those dealing with heat transfer or population dynamics, need to be set more generally in Banach spaces. This is the first book dealing with well-posed infinite-dimensional linear systems with an input, a state, and an output in a Hilbert or Banach space setting. It is also the first to describe the class of non-well-posed systems induced by system nodes. The author shows how standard finite-dimensional results from systems theory can be extended to these more general classes of systems, and complements them with new results which have no finite-dimensional counterpart. Much of the material presented is original, and many results have never appeared in book form before. A comprehensive bibliography rounds off this work which will be indispensable to all working in systems theory, operator theory, delay equations and partial differential equations.

Linear systems can be regarded as a causal shift-invariant operator on a Hilbert space of signals, and by doing so this book presents an introduction to the common ground between operator theory and linear systems theory. The book therefore includes material on pure mathematical topics such as Hardy spaces, closed operators, the gap metric, semigroups, shift-invariant subspaces, the commutant lifting theorem and almost-periodic functions, which would be entirely suitable for a course in functional analysis; at the same time, the book includes applications to partial differential equations, to the stability and stabilization of linear systems, to power signal spaces (including some recent material not previously available in books), and to delay systems, treated from an input/output point of view. Suitable for students of analysis, this book also acts as an introduction to a mathematical approach to systems and control for graduate students in departments of applied mathematics or engineering.

This monograph introduces a class of networked control systems (NCS) called model-based networked control systems (MB-NCS) and presents various architectures and control strategies designed to improve the performance of NCS. The overall performance of NCS considers the appropriate use of network resources, particularly network bandwidth, in conjunction with the desired response of the system being controlled. The book begins with a detailed description of the basic MB-NCS architecture that provides stability conditions in terms of state feedback updates . It also covers typical problems in NCS such as network delays, network scheduling, and data quantization, as well as more general control problems such as output feedback control, nonlinear systems stabilization, and tracking control. Key features and topics include: Time-triggered and event-triggered feedback updates Stabilization of uncertain systems subject to time delays, quantization, and extended absence of feedback Optimal control analysis and design of model-based networked systems Parameter identification and adaptive stabilization of systems controlled over networks The MB-NCS approach to decentralized control of distributed systems Model-Based Control of Networked Systems will appeal to researchers, practitioners, and graduate students interested in the control of networked systems, distributed systems, and systems with limited feedback.

When first published in 2005, Matrix Mathematics quickly became the essential reference book for users of matrices in all branches of engineering, science, and applied mathematics. In this fully updated and expanded edition, the author brings together the latest results on matrix theory to make this the most complete, current, and easy-to-use book on matrices. Each chapter describes relevant background theory followed by specialized results. Hundreds of identities, inequalities, and matrix facts are stated clearly and rigorously with cross references, citations to the literature, and illuminating remarks. Beginning with preliminaries on sets, functions, and relations,Matrix Mathematics covers all of the major topics in matrix theory, including matrix transformations; polynomial matrices; matrix decompositions; generalized inverses; Kronecker and Schur algebra; positive-semidefinite matrices; vector and matrix norms; the matrix exponential and stability theory; and linear systems and control theory. Also included are a detailed list of symbols, a summary of notation and conventions, an extensive bibliography and author index with page references, and an exhaustive subject index. This significantly expanded edition of Matrix Mathematics features a wealth of new material on graphs, scalar identities and inequalities, alternative partial orderings, matrix pencils, finite groups, zeros of multivariable transfer functions, roots of polynomials, convex functions, and matrix norms. Covers hundreds of important and useful results on matrix theory, many never before available in any book Provides a list of symbols and a summary of conventions for easy use Includes an extensive collection of scalar identities and inequalities Features a detailed bibliography and author index with page references Includes an exhaustive subject index with cross-referencing
