Abstract

Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. Geotechnical Safety and Reliability contains 21 peer-reviewed papers assembled in honor of Wilson H. Tang, Ph.D., P.E., S.E. Tang was a pioneer and a prominent leader in the field of engineering uncertainties and reliability analysis. His work extended well beyond the geotechnical realm, encompassing problems in codified design in structural engineering, risk assessment in hydraulic systems, and reliability of transportation systems. The papers in this Geotechnical Special Publication cover a broad range of geotechnical topics, including site exploration; uncertainty characterization and model calibration; reliability methods; reliability of foundations; Bayesian updating; risk assessment; and monitoring and quality assurance. GSP 286 will be of interest to geotechnical researchers and practitioners working in all areas of geotechnical risk assessment.

Abstract

Selected papers from the 2016 International Workshop on Resilience of Urban Tunnels, held in Reston, Virginia, September 1, 2016. Sponsored by the Infrastructure Resilience Division of ASCE. Resiliency Engineering for Urban Tunnels addresses tunnels as a part of the complex urban infrastructure system including transportation systems, such as metro transit networks, and provides a basis for the development of a dynamic risk control and resilient design approach to urban tunnels. Topics in this, the second Infrastructure Resilience Publication (IRP), include smart sensing, uncertainty modeling in construction, integrated robust design through modularity and adaptability, modeling with a component scale and a systems scale perspective, resilience-informed decision making, and multisector interdependencies. Also included is a report on the discussions held during the workshop and the conclusions drawn for future research recommendations. IRP 2 provides state of the art information to researchers, practitioners, and students interested in resilience of urban tunnels and infrastructure.

Abstract

Sponsored by the Committee on Technical Advancement of ASCE. Adapting Infrastructure and Civil Engineering Practice to a Changing Climate presents an accurate discussion of the potential significance of climate change to engineering practice. Although considerable evidence indicates that the climate is changing, significant uncertainty exists regarding the location, timing, and magnitude of this change over the lifetime of infrastructure. Practicing engineers are faced with the dilemma of balancing future needs for engineered infrastructure with the risks posed by the effects of climate change on long-term engineering projects. The gap between climate science and engineering practice somehow must be bridged. This report identifies the technical requirements and civil engineering challenges raised by adaptation to a changing climate. Topics include: review of climate science for engineering practice; incorporating climate science into engineering practice; civil engineering sectors that might be affected by climate change; needs for research, development, and demonstration projects; and summary, conclusions, and recommendations. Three appendixes illustrate different engineering approaches to assessing or preparing for climate change. Practitioners, researchers, educators, and students of civil engineering, as well as government officials and allied professionals, will be fascinated by this discussion of the trade-offs between the expenses of increasing system reliability and the potential costs and consequences of failure to future generations.

Abstract

When it comes to the planning, design, construction, and management of engineering systems, risk and uncertainty are unavoidable. The consideration of the risk involved in any situation, project, or plan becomes an integral part of the decision-making process. Risk and Reliability Analysis: A Handbook for Civil and Environmental Engineers presents key concepts of risk and reliability that apply to a wide array of problems in civil and environmental engineering. The authors begin with an overview of the art of making decisions in the presence of uncertainty and then explain the fundamentals of probability that will be applied throughout the book. In the second part of the book, the authors discuss various techniques used in probability distributions and parameter estimation. A third section of the book considers different aspects of uncertainty analysis, especially risk analysis and risk management, providing instructive examples. The final group of chapters addresses reliability analysis and design, focusing particularly on the important area of water distribution networks. Ample illustrations and detailed real-life examples make Risk and Reliability Analysis essential reading for present and future engineers in the fields of civil, environmental, biological, and agricultural engineering, as well as the watershed sciences. Awards This book was named an Outstanding Academic Title in 2008 by Choice: Reviews for Academic Libraries.

Abstract

Proceedings of the 10th International Conference of Chinese Transportation Professionals, held in Beijing, China, August 4-8, 2010. Sponsored by North American Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (NACOTA); Beijing University of Technology; Transportation and Development Institute of ASCE; Transportation Research Board Committee on Transportation in Developing Countries; National Natural Science foundation of China. This collection of 444 papers focuses on ways meet the needs of urban transportation systems in a capacity that is environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable. In the last two decades, many large cities in China have experienced rapid urban sprawl, which has been resulted in extensive expansion and motorization of the cities. The threat of increasingly unsustainable urban transportation systems has become a focus of attention as the awareness of the unhealthy interaction between a surging demand for transportation services and the environmental impact of such increases. Topics include: comprehensive transportation planning; traffic safety theory and technology; transportation management; operation technology and systems; and public transportation technology and systems.

Abstract

Driven by new regulations, new market structures, and new energy resources, the smart grid has been the trigger for profound changes in the way that electricity is generated, distributed, managed, and consumed. The smart grid has raised the traditional power grid by using a two-way electricity and information flow to create an advanced, automated power supply network. However, these pioneering smart grid technologies must grow to adapt to the demands of the current digital society. In today’s digital landscape, we can access feasible data and knowledge that were merely inconceivable. This Special Issue aims to address the landscape in which smart grids are progressing, due to the advent of pervasive technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT). It will be the advanced exploitation of the massive amounts of data generated from (low-cost) IoT sensors that will become the main driver to evolve the concept of the smart grid, currently focused on infrastructure, towards the digital energy network paradigm, focused on service. Furthermore, collective intelligence will improve the processes of decision making and empower citizens. Original manuscripts focusing on state-of-the-art IoT networking and communications, M2M communications, cyberphysical system architectures, big data analytics or cloud computing applied to digital energy platforms, including design methodologies and practical implementation aspects, are welcome.

Abstract

The use of the energy and its resources have changed dramatically in last few decades. The increasing use of technology and electrification increases the demand for energy, with impacts natural energy resources. At present, industries are trying to reduce the direct use of traditional energy by utilizing renewable energy as an alternative energy resource. Recent studies have attempted to optimize consumed energies for entire systems by using alternative energies. These alternatives are different kinds of renewable energies which provide numerous new possibilities to survive without using non-renewable energies. The production industry is moving toward smart production using the technology of the fourth industrial revolution. In this book, energy consumption for production and supply chain management are explained through presentation of some the latest major research advances. These studies collectively contribute new ideas and strategies in enriching the literature.
