Abstract

Over the last decade, GIS (geographical information systems) has established itself as a collaborative information processing system. The vast domain of information it can process is ever increasing and so is its popularity. Yet this interdisciplinary field is not available to the vast community of students and academicians as a subject of study. This book adresses the GIS user domain encompassing students, users and engineers. Important aspects of geographical information science (GISc), which is the basis of GIS, are explained. The book aims to capture the basics of GIS from the point of view of a student. The requirements of GIS have been explained keeping in mind the general user's level of knowledge. The processing capability of GIS along with the mathematics and formulae involved in arriving at a solution are explained for students and cartographers. The work flow of the whole system, its output and applications are illustrated from an engineer's point of view.

Abstract

Abstract

The map, as it appears in Gilles Deleuze's writings, is a concept guiding the exploration of new territories, no matter how abstract. With the advent of new media and digital technologies, contemporary artists have imagined a panoply of new spaces that put Deleuze's concept to the test. Deleuze's concept of the map bridges the gap between the analog and the digital, information and representation, virtual and actual, canvas and screen and is therefore best suited for the contemporary artistic landscape. Deleuze and the Map-Image explores cartography from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives and argues that the concept of the map is a critical touchstone for contemporary multidisciplinary art. This book is an overview of Deleuze's cartographic thought read through the theories of Sloterdijk, Heidegger, and Virilio and the art criticism of Laura U. Marks, Carolyn L. Kane, and Alexander Galloway, shaping it into a critical tool through which to view the works of cutting edge artists such as Janice Kerbel and Hajra Waheed, who work with digital and analog art. After all, Deleuze did write that a map can be conceived as a work of art, and so herein art is critiqued through cartographic strategies.

Abstract

"Telegeoprocessing is the integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Big Data and Telecommunication. This unique compendium brings together most of the key issues involved in research in novel systems in telegeoprocessing. It elucidates a comprehensive introduction to the problems encountered in telegeoprocessing engineering and the major technologies and standards related to designing an integrated, fully functional telegeoprocessing system based on the latest multimedia and telecommunication technologies. The useful cross-disciplinary reference text benefits teachers and researchers in both universities and research organizations, and for anyone keen in the impact of Earth observation, big data, geoinformatics in civil communities and human societies"--

Abstract

Over the past few decades the world has been organized through the growth and integration of geographic information systems (GIS) across public and private sector industries, agencies, and organizations. This has happened in a technological context that includes the widespread deployment of multiple digital mobile technologies, digital wireless communication networks, positioning, navigation and mapping services, and cloud-based computing, spawning new ways of imagining, creating, and consuming geospatial information and analytics. GIS: An Introduction to Mapping Technologies is written with the detached voices of practitioner scholars who draw on a diverse set of experiences and education, with a shared view of GIS that is grounded in the analysis of scale-diverse contexts emphasizing cities and their social and environmental geographies. GIS is presented as a critical toolset that allows analysts to focus on urban social and environmental sustainability. The book opens with chapters that explore foundational techniques of mapping, data acquisition and field data collection using GNSS, georeferencing, spatial analysis, thematic mapping, and data models. It explores web GIS and open source GIS making geospatial technology available to many who would not be able to access it otherwise. Also, the book covers in depth the integration of remote sensing into GIS, Health GIS, Digital Humanities GIS, and the increased use of GIS in diverse types of organizations. Active learning is emphasized with ArcGIS Desktop lab activities integrated into most of the chapters. Written by experienced authors from the Department of Geography at DePaul University in Chicago, this textbook is a great introduction to GIS for a diverse range of undergraduates and graduate students, and professionals who are concerned with urbanization, economic justice, and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract

"Spatial Computing is a set of ideas and technologies that transform our lives by understanding the physical world, knowing and communicating our relation to places in that world, and navigating through those places. With over a billion users, the potential for spatial computing to transform our modern lives is already evident. From Uber and Google Maps to consumer GPS devices, our society has benefitted immensely from spatial technology. We've reached the point where a hiker in Yellowstone, a Pokemon Go player in Paris, a self-driving car in California, a UAV surveying a corn field in Minnesota, and an Uber driver in Mumbai know precisely where they are, nearby points of interest, and how to reach their destinations. Groups of friends can form impromptu events via "check-in" models used by Facebook. Emergency services use it to locate not only 911-callers but also smart phones in evacuation zones or approaching tornadoes. Public health agencies use it to monitor the spread of infectious diseases to plan responses. Scientists use it to track endangered species to better understand behavior and farmers use it for precision agriculture to increase crop yields while reducing run-off and costs. Google Earth is being used in classrooms to teach children about their neighborhoods and the world in a fun and interactive way. Augmented reality applications like Pokemon Go are providing real-time place-labeling in the physical world and providing people detailed information about major landmarks nearby. These accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg" [Publisher]
