Principles and Practice of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Second Edition aims to serve as the definitive reference textbook for SRS practitioners. It provides a theoretical basis for the use of therapeutic SRS including imaging techniques and radiobiology. The bulk of the textbook contains chapters that are comprehensive in scope on all diseases that are treated by SRS. Lastly, it addresses administrative and technical aspects of running an SRS unit. Each chapter provides an expansive treatment of the subject. Emphasis is placed on the technical aspects of SRS so that practitioners in this field will use it as a daily reference. Each subject is presented by historical context, then by its pathophysiology. Current treatment methods and results are addressed in depth. A liberal use of tables and figures enhance the presentation. A review of all major clinical studies and representative case presentations, where possible, are provided with imaging, treatment planning, and follow-up results. Each chapter is followed by one or two mini-chapters that provide a counter-viewpoint experience to the main chapter, which is oriented to SRS. These counter-viewpoint chapters are written by a noted expert in that field and address in greater detail the indications, results, and complications of their approach to the disease discussed in the main chapter. Principles and Practice of Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Second Edition is the only reference needed for neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists at all levels of training and practice who are interested in SRS. .

The tremendous progress evolving in medical technologies in recent years increasingly influences our daily neurological practice. Ethical aspects in the application of technologies from differing viewpoints are discussed in detail. Additionally, typical examples for the application of medical technologies in the operating room include image processing, robotic devices, and intraoperative imaging are clearly presented.

This volume covers stereotactic principles and functional stereotaxis. Amongst the stereotactic principles are discussions of frame-based and frameless systems of stereotaxis, image guidance stereotaxis, atlases and the technical aspects of radiosurgery. Within functional neurosurgery, disorders covered include the diagnosis and management of pain, epilepsy, movement disorders and the rediscovered field of surgery for psychiatric disorders.

Principles of Stereotactic Radiosurgery is the only contemporary, comprehensive reference for neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists using Gamma Knife and Linear Accelerator technology. Each chapter includes specific case presentations representative of the most commonly treated conditions, including applications for spinal disorders. Chapters conclude with counterpoint experiences, oriented to treatment options other than radiosurgery (i.e., medical management, standard surgery). These counterpoint discussions are written by noted experts and address in greater detail the indications, results and complications of their approach and enable readers to improve decision making with regard to choosing treatment options for their own patients. Also included is information on important non-surgical aspects of radiosurgery, including site construction, regulatory and billing issues, legal concerns, and nursing care issues. The editors have treated over 3000 patients using this technology, and international contributors share their experience as well.
