Abstract

Surface engineering can be defined as an enabling technology used in a wide range of industrial activities. Surface engineering was founded by detecting surface features which destroy most of pieces, e.g. abrasion, corrosion, fatigue, and disruption; then it was recognized, more than ever, that most technological advancements are constrained with surface requirements. In a wide range of industry (such as gas and oil exploitation, mining, and manufacturing), the surfaces generate an important problem in technological advancement. Passing time shows us new interesting methods in surface engineering. These methods usually apply to enhance the surface properties, e.g. wear rate, fatigue, abrasion, and corrosion resistance. This book collects some of new methods in surface engineering.

Abstract

Abrasion is the primary type of wear in almost all fields of industry. It is particularly relevant to the longevity of pipelines and pumps and to almost all processing industries and applications where a constant interface exists with abrasive substances such as dust, sediments, or fluids with mineral particles. The performance of systems can be degraded depending on the properties of abrasive particles such as size, velocity, angle of impact and shape. Furthermore, abrasion significantly affects the appearance of end-products, which can be especially important in applications where surface finishes are of prime importance. The use of materials which are resistant to abrasion can help retain the appearance of finished products, cut costs associated with maintenance and wear, and prevent system downtime. Materials which are abrasion-resistant are useful for situations where serious damage and mechanical wear can occur and where there is critical demand. The aim of this book is to evaluate abrasion-resistant materials that are already in use or under development, as well as to present information on new techniques in the design and application of such materials. This book will be of interest to a wide audience of engineers dealing with wear problems.

Abstract

High temperature corrosion is an extremely important area of corrosion as it causes the failure of high temperature equipment in process industry and power generation. Every engineer is required to obtain a basic knowledge of high temperature corrosion to prevent the colossal damage caused by it. This book contains chapters ranging from basic to advance topics to create an understanding of high temperature of various metals and alloys. With the emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, their role in controlling high temperature corrosion needs to be comprehended and new techniques developed to control high temperature corrosion. It is hoped that this book would fulfill these objectives and aspirations of the readers. Note from the publisher: It is with great sadness and regret that we inform the contributing authors and future readers of this book that the Editor, Prof. Zaki Ahmad passed away shortly after finishing the book and before having a chance to see its publication. Prof. Ahmad was InTech's long term collaborator and edited his first book with us in 2011 (''Recent Trends in Processing and Degradation of Aluminium Alloys''). The book ''High Temperature Corrosion'' was his fourth edited volume. The fruitful collaboration continued until his final days when he was acting as a co-editor on a book ''Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery''. We would like to acknowledge Dr. Zaki Ahmad's contribution to open access scientific publishing, which he made during 6 years of dedicated work on edited volumes and express our gratitude for his pleasant cooperation with us.

Abstract

Taking into account that corrosion is costly and dangerous phenomenon, it becomes obvious that people engaged in the design and the maintenance of structures and equipment, should have a basic understanding of localized corrosion processes. The Editor hopes that this book will be helpful for researchers in conducting investigations in the field of localized corrosion, as well as for engineers encountering pitting and crevice corrosion, by providing some basic information concerning the causes, prevention, and control of pitting corrosion.
