Spanning the modern development of psychological science and practice-the era most relevant to today's psychologists-this concise overview of psychology's history focuses on how the field has striven to make a positive impact on society and the individuals within it. It not only examines, decade by decade, the key developments in psychology, but goes beyond the usual ""schools and systems"" approach to illuminate not just how psychological theories developed but how they have been applied and practiced. The text is unique in its focus on connecting the historical development of psychology

The ageing population of Europe is a well-documented phenomenon and there is general agreement that it has serious implications for all European citizens as well as for policymakers and politicians. The current paradigm of caring for elderly citizens in residential homes is becoming untenable and it is also unpopular with many elderly people themselves. New ways of caring which engage and empower older adults more actively, and are also more cost-effective, must be found. The four-year DREAMING (elDeRly-friEndly Alarm handling and MonitorING) project carried out randomized controlled trials across six pilot sites to assess the impact of tele-monitoring on the health and quality of life of older people with chronic health conditions living at home. This book documents the results of the DREAMING project, which addressed one of the most important health and social care issues affecting older adults: namely, monitoring older people from a clinical point of view as a preventative measure to reduce exacerbations requiring intensive medical treatment, ensure their safety indoors and outdoors, and reduce their loneliness through eInclusion tools. This, in turn, improves the ability of care professionals to support these people, all in a cost effective way. The clinical results of the quality of life and economic impact assessments, together with the outcome of the user satisfaction survey are presented in the book, and lessons learned, as well as guidelines for the deployment of tele-monitoring are included.

"This thoughtful book provides a refreshing, comparative perspective on the future of care homes in our post-pandemic world. Building on more than a decade of collaborative international and interdisciplinary research in Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US, it employs a feminist political economy framework to address the key challenges facing care homes in this turbulent era. With particular attention to lessons learned in Canada, Sweden, and Norway, the contributing authors argue that publicly-funded care homes remain critical to care arrangements but require policy and practice transformations to produce equitable and supportive conditions. Attentive to the specific contexts and tensions that shape care, chapters address key questions about care home quality and labour in relation to gender, race, ethnicity, religion and class. The book analyses the physical and social boundaries that set the conditions for quality of life and care, moving beyond the minimum to explain how nursing homes can provide joy. Offering alternative approaches to the complex challenges facing this vital public service, this book will be a key reference for students and scholars of health policy, comparative social policy and social work. Its integration of statistical, policy and practice analysis with ethnographic research will prove invaluable to those concerned with long-term care policy and practice"--

Assisted living, the fastest growing residential option, burst upon the American landscape in the late 1980's. These facilities serve persons who no longer are able to live independently and need help with the activities of daily living, but do not need 24-hour nursing care. James Allen has updated and refined this second edition of Assisted Living Administration to include new information on the Senate Aging Taskforce report of 2003, and the financial shape of the industry. The volume also covers resident care issues, aging theories, as well as new industry data. This volume is intended as a
