Die Untersuchung von Feindbildern zwischen Nord- und Südstaaten bietet einen völlig neuen Blick auf die Entstehungsgeschichte des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs.Als freie Staaten und Sklavenstaaten zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts über die Vorherrschaft in der amerikanischen Union stritten, heizten intersektionale Feindbilder die Lage zusätzlich auf. Im Süden wurden vermutete Eigenschaften der »Yankees«, etwa materielle Gier sowie eine Neigung zu Heuchelei und Fanatismus, als Bedrohung für die eigene Sicherheit wahrgenommen. Nordstaatler hetzten wiederum gegen Sklavenhalter, die sie für brutale, faule und zutiefst unamerikanische Aristokraten hielten. Diese Feindbilder untergruben das gegenseitige Vertrauen und führten das Land in einen blutigen Bürgerkrieg.

The Francophone Caribbean and the American South are sites born of the plantation, the common matrix for the diverse nations and territories of the circum-Caribbean. This book takes as its premise that the basic configuration of the plantation, in terms of its physical layout and the social relations it created, was largely the same in the Caribbean and the American South. Essays written by leading authorities in the field examine the cultural, social, and historical affinities between the Francophone Caribbean and the American South, including Louisiana, which among the Southern states has had a quite particular attachment to France and the Francophone world. The essays focus on issues of history, language, politics and culture in various forms, notably literature, music and theatre. Considering figures as diverse as Barack Obama, Frantz Fanon, Miles Davis, James Brown, Edouard Glissant, William Faulkner, Maryse Condé and Lafcadio Hearn, the essays explore in innovative ways the notions of creole culture and creolization, terms rooted in and indicative of contact between European and African people and cultures in the Americas, and which are promoted here as some of the most productive ways for conceiving of the circum-Caribbean as a cultural and historical entity.

Originally published in 1979. The idea of the "South" has its roots in Romanticism and American culture of the nineteenth century. This study by Michael O'Brien analyzes how the idea of a unique Southern consciousness endured into the twentieth century and how it affected the lives of prominent white Southern intellectuals. Individual chapters treat Howard Odum, John Donald Wade, John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Frank Owsley, and Donald Davidson. The chapters trace each man's growing need for the idea of the South—how each defined it and how far each was able to sustain the idea as an element of social analysis. The Idea of the American South moves the debate over Southern identity from speculative essays about the "central theme" of Southern history and, by implication, past the restricted perception that race relations are a sufficient key to understanding the history of Southern identity.

Only eighteen years old when he marched off to war, young Confederate Robert Campbell already possessed the keen, perceptive eye of a seasoned journalist. After fighting with the 5th Texas Infantry Regiment in the famed Hood's Texas Brigade, Campbell recorded the first months of his service for the benefit of future generations of his family.
