Almost 30 years have gone by since the postulation that GISTs derive from mesenchymal stem elements, and only 15 years have gone by since the definitive detection of origin of GISTs. Research in the last decade was more focused upon the justification of imatinib mezylate therapy in GISTs and clarification why a secondary resistance that occurred during the kinase inhibitors therapy. The era of therapy for GISTs, targeting the primary activating mutations in the KIT proto-oncogene; is being proclaimed as bringing the message of special importance to the pathologist role in multidisciplinary team that are responsible for treating patients with locally advanced or metastatic GIST. This is the first conclusive message forthcoming from this book. On the other hand, the book provides summarised and case-based knowledge on current management of gastrointestinal and extragastrointestinal stromal tumours. We hope that this book may be considered as a worthwhile timely addition to clinical science dissemination, medical education, further basic and clinical research.

This textbook provides a comprehensive, state of the art review of this field, and will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians, surgeons and researchers with an interest in GIST. The book reviews new data about risk factors for the disease, profiles the new staging system for GIST, highlights our current understanding of genetic mutations that lead to GIST, and provides new perspectives about imaging of GIST tumors. For localized disease, a greater appreciation of organ-sparing approaches and the importance of preservation of gastrointestinal function is discussed in detail, and advances in surgical techniques are highlighted, including minimally invasive surgery. For metastatic disease, the molecular biology of GIST is reviewed in a detailed and understandable manner, including the data that has fostered novel targeted approaches that have revolutionized management. Several landmark trials have been published in the last few years and are placed in context with respect to current management. Integration of surgery and systemic therapy through consolidative approaches has yielded provocative data that promises to further advance the field, and major advances in this domain are also discussed. Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors: Bench to Bedside will serve as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in, this challenging malignancy. It provides a concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts. All chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific and clinical information.

This book aims to provide a complete overview of the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). It has been conceived to be both a detailed guide for clinical practice and an updated reference for all those involved in the evaluation of GISTs imaging. The publication provides comprehensive descriptions of the full range of common imaging and nonimaging techniques used in the diagnosis and followup of GISTs. Techniques reviewed include: · Conventional radiography · Endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound · Conventional, color-Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound · Computed tomography · Magnetic resonance imaging, and · Contrast-enhanced PET/CT imaging Both medical and surgical treatment strategies are also fully reviewed. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter that aims to stimulate widespread interest in the formation of new GISTs Units. Written by experts in the field, the book is enriched throughout by numerous black-and-white and color images, making it an invaluable source of information as well as an indispensable guide to interpreting images for radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, oncologists and surgeons. .
